The BF3 funding thread does not need to be hardcore vs softcore, the reason i originally locked the thread was to avoid the "i wont donate because of lack of hardcore, however hotstuff pointed out discrepancies(though not outright mistakes) so ive openned it for questions, not for as i said "im not because".

Moving the hardcore vs softcore discussion here:

I've also added a poll, so people can declare their leanings. When i say hardcore, i am defining hardcore by the way it is defined in BFBC2. And for neutral, that includes people like me who prefer normal, but advocate neither in discussions, and will happily play on hardcore.

...this is going to turn into another hardcore vs. "softcore" debate, but still. Realism can be fun, but to a point - the game also needs to be fun, and you need to be able to communicate with your team effectively to really be able to co-ordinate a defence in battlefield games. When you turn off all those things that have been added in to provide that, things get very boring very quickly for defenders (regardless of the game mode).

The fact that you have lower health and whatnot I couldn't give two hoots about - it's the lack of minimap and the lack of spotting that really is the dealbreaker here.

When I last joined our BC2 server it was on hardcore and rush mode and I was on the defending team. I saw a pair of attackers move right round the back of the base, moved to intercept, and was taken out. My team then totally failed to notice these guys and they acted as a mobile spawn point, causing us to get attacked from 2 directions simultaneously, making it entirely impossible to defend when married with an assault from a tank aswell.

Now you could argue that that is due to good tactics on the attacker's part. My opinion of such a situation is that i've been deprived of the tools required to be able to have a chance of defending that attack successfully - if I'd been able to inform my team that we were being flanked by using the spotting functionality, chances are some other people would have seen what I saw and dealt with it before it became a threat.

The odds are usually in favour of attackers in most situations in battlefield games, as can easily be evidenced by the win/loss ratio of any soldier on Rush mode - so making it even more difficult to defend a position and then willingly removing those aids is just entirely abhorrent to me.

I am with bloke for all the reasons above, we disagree on lots of BF related topics but I'm with you on this. I'm not that bothered about the health but I find I'd prefer a happy medium between hc and normal. HC a fart kills you normal mode all teh bullets in world won't bring you down. I can normally do pretty well on either.

What annoys me in hc exactly as bloke has described is the crippling effect tactically that HC brings.
In BFBC2 you can have all the hardcore settings bar lowered health, health regen etc, as there are many settings under the handle of "hardcore", the problem is that you cant have all the other settings ticked in hardcore, (to make the ui elements visible). I am hoping in BF3 we will be able to run hardcore, where the only (who wants to bet i missed one) things affected are: Player health(and regen), ammo counter, friendly fire.

It should be down to server admins to choose how the teamplay elements (Killcam(Confirmed server control in BF3 already), minimap, crosshair, 3d spotting, minimap spotting, 3rd person vehicle cams) are reduced in hardcore.

I do fine on voip with friends, always getting gold squad pins and capturing/destroying objectives quite well.
I'm yet to see a game do good ingame communication between players without spoon feeding you everything.

This has always been my experience too. But i am not saying i enjoy the inability of being able to properly designate targets on TS.

In addition it has been reported that in the BF3 alpha the damage elements of the game function somewhere between normal and hardcore in BFBC2 terms, so the basic game will not be like normal in BFBC2, dmg wise. Of course, thats only alpha.
