Having BF2142 issues? Then read this...

Ok most people that I have talked to on THN so far (including myself) have experienced an issue with the demo of 2142. I thought I would describe it here for everyone to see so that you can fix this problem should you have the same issue.

It revolves around a dll file that the game requires on startup, a file called d3dx9_29.dll.

This file seems to be missing on alot of people's systems. The reason? This file is part of a DirectX update that seems to have been kept quiet and off of the MSN auto updater.

This latest DirectX version was left out of the BF2142 demo installation to keep the filesize down. To include it, they would have had to include the FULL DirectX install with it, which IIRC would add around 250-300MB.

However you don't need a 250MB download to fix this!

Simply go to www.microsoft.com/directx and on the right there should be, in a "Quick Links" section a place to "get the latest version of DirectX" go there and follow the prompts to validate Windows (you do have a legit version of Windows don't you?).

Once validated, you will be prompted to download the directX web setup application which will check your DirectX installation and then update it if required. I myself required about 7MB of downloads to update it fully.

Once done, fire up BF2142 and enjoy the gaming goodness!!! :D

On a bf2142 related subject, can I use my bf2 login details?

I tried last night and it said no account by that name was found, but then when I try and create an account under that name it says there is one?!?!

Any suggestions?

You have to use an EA Account to login in, and then once logged in you choose an in-game nick.

Though, I could choose Piacular as my ingame name, even though that's supposed to be saved under the Vet's Program. Maybe the demo and the retail will have different name checks, since the demo doesn't track stats, etc.

Wise guy :P - Some B*****d has already registered my nick, DAMN THEM TO HELL!!!!!

Oh and anyone got any ideas on how to stop my antivirus software from renaming the game .exe file, as it deems it "suspicious"...i'm using Panda Titanium 2006 btw.

Im having some issues of a different sort - graphical. Most of its all very nice, shimmering lights, lovely. However, I get a strange problem with shadows, and it isnt limited to 2142 although I have noticed it most in this game. Battlefield 2, and 1942, also suffer from this problem.

Basically, if there is a shadow in front of me (particularly off of vehicles or missile launch pads i.e. non static objects, or objects that do not form the map's base architecture) sometimes it flickers rapidly and annoyingly. Ive found that if I look at the horizon, and the shadow is in the lower part of my screen, about 5 inches below the crosshair, then the shadow flickers constantly. However, as I start to look down and then finally look directly at the shadow, the flickering slows down and then stops completely. A similar kind of thing happens in CnC Renegade and HalfLife 2, but isnt quite so noticeable. Its a shame, because apart from the flickering the game looks awesome. Personally, Id rather have no shadows at all than having them flicker like mad. Anyone else have this problem? Know how to sort it? Based on how the degree of flickerance (my very own word) varies with perspective, my initial thought is - aniso filtering. However, im not sure I even have aniso on.

Just so you know, I downloaded my last driver update about a month and a half ago. If there's been any update between then and now I dont have it. My DirectX is fully up to date.

Most games that have dynamic shadows have that... Source games have it too IIRC. AFAIK the only game with dynamic shadows that I personally haven't gotten flickering shadows is FEAR.

I don't know how to stop the flickering but I believe there is an option in the graphics settings to disable shadows...
