Thought this crashed and burned???
Yeah, EA got their claws into it and didn't do a brilliant job as publishers (anyone surprised?), and they had to shut down after a while. Then some Korean group got their hands on the rights for the game, the first expansion, and the unfinished second expansion, put it all together, upgraded it, removed the "feature" where your graphics card might kersplode (ask Blacker, I'm not kidding
), added more content in (including a third expansion of their own, from the looks of it), added a microtransaction system, and set it going. Proved to be a hit over in the lands of the east, so they brought it back here.
So far as I'm aware, game will always be free to start an account for, download and start playing, although you need to buy a "pass" to get into the 3rd Act and beyond; one pass lasts forever and covers the entire account, and cost me less than £2 (with enough of their "T-coin" currency left over to perhaps get some shinies), and any expenditures past that are entirely up to the individual.
Oh, and it's improved a LOT since the original version, which I played in beta and at release, and loved (enough so to get the collector's edition).
TL;DR: it's back, it's better, it's basically free, and it no longer kills PCs
