HL2 and queasiness

Ahey, :)

Right, I don't know where this comes from or what to do about it:

HL2 makes me phisically ill. It upsets my stomach and makes my head pound... All it takes is a few minutes of playing...

It's not the engine. I can play CS:Source for as long as I want... but it is the graphics, somehow. If I start up CS:S and go to the graphics board benchmarking thing, I get the exact same feeling.

It's annoying the crap out of me... :(

Cheers,
J.

Oddly enough I don't think this is the first case I've heard of for this issue... I couldn't say for sure what is causing it but a few suggestions to check might be:

- turn on/off vsync
- increase refresh rate on monitor (if CRT)
- try running the game with the -dxlevel 70 command, this will force it to DirectX 7 graphics levels and will run very quickly, thus hopefully identifying if frame rate is your issue.

Hope that helps! :)

Have you had your eyes tested recently...? I've had increased bouts of motion queasiness when my prescription was somewhat off and that I attribute to focus and head bob.

Also see if you can't find the field of view setting somewhere in the advanced options and (probably) lower it.

While probably not related to this, i read somewhere(probably steam forums) that people who keep their heads perfectly still on these types of games get motion sickness.

Though your definition of "crap" is fairly eclectic. :)

Well I really liked Episode 1, and I'm halfway through an equally enjoyable Episode 2, but the original game was just boring trash. Half of it was fiddling around trying to solve gravity puzzles with that counter-intuitive crappity gun, and the other half was listening to the Gay-Man talking psycho-spiritual bollocks like "No, miiiiiister F-f-freeman *small chortle* you will KNOW when the time is PARAMOUNT for you to complete the PATH which you were SET ON *another small chuckle* by the remnants of a HIGHER CONCIOUSNESSssSsssssssSSssssssssss".
The two episodes were just straightforward, no-nonsense 'here's the enemy, shoot it', 'heres the unstable nuclear field, stabilise it' or 'here's the exploding building, get the hell away from it'. The first game was just a showcase for the fancy new engine with a game loosely tacked on the side, like Crysis.

Also make sure that you can clearly see the crosshair in the middle of the screen. It may be worth changing its colour so it is more visible.

While it is a different game, during development for Mirror's Edge the devs for that found that without a dot in the centre of the screen that players could use as a reference point, then some people would experience motion sickness
