[Tech] How far would you go for broadband?

More of a [Tech] article than anything:

I'd have just moved house, frankly. I refuse to live places if I can't get a decent ADSL2+ or better connection with low latency.

Its on the list of concerns whever we move anywhere. Its probably on a par with Transport links for me - need to be able to get around both physically and virtually.

That being said I know I can live off a 512kb if I need to albeit with some planning, as long as my latency is less than 60 its pretty much all good.

It is a shame that the "white space" - what is currently the analogue TV waveband - WE probably won't ever see it over here though...

BBC News said:
In the UK much of this space is being dedicated for use by services like wireless microphones for broadcast use, and for cognitive radio, a smart wireless technology that allows for the use of wi-fi.

Annyingly I've moved from somewhere with okay broadband (happily get about 8mb), to shitty broadband. Sad times :(

I'm having mild coniptions at only having 9.5Mb downstream... still haven't quite got over having 200Mb of free bandwidth to the US for around two weeks back in late '99...

"only" 9.5Mbps downstream???

count yourself lucky... I'm on 5.5Mbps and it's not looking like it's improving in a hurry :/

At least my connection is stable and low latency though :)

Yeah, mine is dropping intermittently (at least once a day) but only for 15-20 seconds. In my place in Eastleigh, I had around 14.5Mbps downstream so I'm trying to get back to that.

yeah i've found that when i sync with overly high downstream i get more disconnections than if it's around the norm, though fortunately norm is around 15.2mb\s :)

link :D

Not that I'm getting it, myself. I'm perfectly content with my 14 / 2 Mbit connection atm. Also, I'm getting 100 mbit full duplex in 2012 (unless, of course, there's a delay... >_<) :D :D :D

p.s. yes, it won't work in the more remote areas, but soon it will, I hope. d.s.
