Found this interesting article on the bbc website today, and I thought that it would be interesting to know if everybody here falls into the trends mentioned and what opinions you may have on them...

I personally spend more than 25 seconds on a homepage, unless its the THN homepage when the first thing I do is click on the "new posts" link ;) If i'm going to a new webpage I look around at what links are available and which best fits what I want. The same goes for online shops such as Amazon or Play as I will browse the front page to see if they have anything interesting highlighted that I might want to buy.

So overall I think that this study doesnt really cover the full gamut of personalities that are using the web, and if poeple just spend 25 seconds on each page then they're not gonna learn much.

25 seconds? I'm not sure people are even that patient! I shoot for 10 second attention spans if I can when delivering "highlights", when considering design/layout.

Argh. This is reminding me of my Web and Hypertext exams I had on Tuesday... grrrr.... But the 25 seconds figure for viewing homepages sounds reasonable. Put simply, the content you want from a web site is rarely on its homepage (bbc news for an example?) Ok so summaries of stories are there, and then you click a link which will take you to the related full story. I can't think of anywhere I go (apart from the odd webcomic) where the content I want is on the homepage...

I run a web hosting company - if you think I spend my days hosting porn then you are very misguided. The web handles all my phone, email and data needs as well as social outlets (like THN). Whilst I could go on for hours I think you should revise your thoughts on that one before I bother.

Be careful Gombol you may be giving the impression that is your own uses, rather than everyone/anyone else.......

[Tangent] The internet is a great resource for research as well, make's searching for work on a given subject alot easier than trawling through tons of books. Although with any research check your source's reliability as well. [/Tangent]
