Hunter DPS

I'm probably going to be doing instances soon so can someone give me tips on maximising hunter DPS please? I assume it's to do with firing a steady shot right after an autoshot or some such thing.

I'm posting this here rather than googling because work has blocked all gaming related sites so it'd be a waste of time even trying. :(

Ok, i remember on my hunter lith said somthing around these words: "dont spam steady shot, it will mess up the natural DPS of your bow" basicly, ignore that and use one of these two macros:

#showtooltip Auto Shot
/cast !Auto Shot
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Kill command
/cast Steady Shot
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()

or

#showtooltip Auto Shot
/cast !Auto Shot
/cast [target=pettarget, exists] Kill command
/castsequence reset=5 Steady Shot, Arcane Shot, Steady Shot, Steady Shot, Steady Shot, Steady Shot, Steady Shot
/script UIErrorsFrame:Clear()

Spamming one of those macros will pwn. :3

So the pet is used nowadays in instances/raiding? Wasn't the case back when I was a raider.. you know.. the old days.. when my guild was second on server to down ragnaros with 40 people in groups and... blah blah etc

But button mashing sucks.. it'll be like playing my mage all over again.. well, even less involved by sounds of it.

If you are BM, your pet will make up like 40-60% of your DPS, if your MM/Survival, they are still the best macros to spam, about 99% of hunters use one of those macros :)

Yeah don't get me wrong I will use them, so thanks :)

What's the diff between the two?

If I'm reading them right you should catch a kill command on all pet crits by spamming the button.. but spamming it might mess up your cast seq?

One uses arcane shot, the other doesnt (some fights arcane shot = bad though, maulgar for example when the ranged DPS go onto the mage boss, arcane shot dispells the shield the mage needs to spell steal)

I don't ^^

I do all that by hand to be a little more flexible if something unforseen happens. But if you are too lazy for that it is still a good makro ;)

Oh and if oyu want to maximise DPS, get yourself either a cat, a ravager or a dragonhawk as pet, they have the highest attack damage.

Baldi, That macro is what almost every hunter in the game uses, its the most DPS efficent on you can have.

If you're a selfish player content only with flexing your personal e-peen on the damage meters, then maybe. The best tool you can have for a hunter (or for any class) is an in-depth knowledge of your class.

Hunter is a utility class that also deals good damage. The best advice I can give is to read up on the class abilities, understand how they work and then use your brain - you may be called upon to misdirect-pull, trap, kite, debuff bosses and so on. Cat, Ravager, Dragonhawk pets might be good for your personal DPS, but a Wolf pet provides a damage buff for yourself and the rest of your party.

On the other hand, if you have a lack of both brains and skill, and are fortunate enough to be in a guild that can compensate for your shortcomings, then you can get by with uber gear and macro spamming, and the chances are your guild mates will be just the same, so they won't notice... of course, that won't be in The Haven!

Naturally I want to learn everything about the class in instancing/raiding.. hence the post ;)

It isn't all about DPS. I remember on my mage.. was always top 3 DPS anwyay (no macros).. but my biggest ever accomplishment was when I received praise for respositioning Onyxia to the tanks on phase 3 (where she lands and randomly aggros people sometimes) by blinking straight over there the second I got an aggro alert. I thought I was a goner but she moved right where we wanted her and I lost aggro and helped finish her off.

Being a good player is about being quick on your feet, quick to adapt.
Being the best at your class can only be obtained through experience and asking questions.

You're horribly misquoting me. See, initially you were just pressing Steady Shot constantly, literally just spamming it. It needs to be timed so as to allow Auto-shot to go off properly, and with proper timing, will also allow you to maximise the use of other abilities (re-marking, re-stinging, Arcane/Multi-shot, healing the pet, etc). You were interrupting your own Auto-shot with the Steady-shot spam, which was quite hopeless...

Baldi, That macro is what almost every hunter in the game uses, its the most DPS efficent on you can have.

I never used that macro and you never did better damage than Umbrator did, and he was lesser-geared. That macro is alright, but learning to time it properly yourself gives a little more leeway. IT is NOT the "most DPS effecient", it's just pretty damned good as training wheels. If you utterly have to rely on macros for your standard DPS and can't cope otherwise, then you've failed epicly.

Edit: Just remembered as an extra; those macros don't take into account the effects of Arcane Shot in certain fights. If you use Arcane Shot on Krosh in Gruul's Lair, you've killed the Mage. If you use it on certain mobs with resistances, you're wasting mana. It's just a flat no-intelligence macro that I've seen cause problems before. Last time I Krosh-tanked, I had to make sure that all the hunters present weren't using Arcane Shot since I had no desire to see Krosh wipe half the raid.

I don't have any such macros, as I think they make the game boring. Also, not using them makes me more flexible to adjust my shot rotation to the specific environment/situation. But then again, I don't use key-bindings either. I guess being a girl makes me fond of using my mouse.

My point exactly, and part of the reason I'll never use such macros, or cast-sequence macro'ing that too many people are fond of in raid guilds...

But then again, I don't use key-bindings either.

Same here, can't remember ever having used anything other than the game's default keybindings.

I guess being a girl makes me fond of using my mouse.
