Ah yes, Li-ion batteries. They do this from time to time, especially the earlier models were unsafe with some phones exploding, but it's very very rare these days. It's really a result of the quest for more powerful batteries, the more chemical energy you want to store, the more reactive your chemicals have to be, the more fireworks you get when something goes wrong. Just be glad we're not powering our laptops with fuel cells and alcohol yet.

The fact that this happens once to a Dell doesn't really say anything, it may as well happen randomly, dell have a large marketshare after all.
