you could also open the picture in editing program of your choice and save it as a different file type? Iirc the reason we don't allow gifs is because of irritating animated ones, although I'm not sure about this.... *stumbles off into the background again*

As far as I'm aware, paint can load up gifs and you can then save it as a different format like jpg.
But you can't go wrong with Photoshop to do everything with images, although it ain't free :p

Whilst Photoshop will do it (I got it free for some reason :-D)

It'll be far easier to do it via Paint (which you will have) as there's less options.
Simply save as then choose JPEG or whatever.

Even still, it will have to be a very small very low resolution pic of yourself! lol (whether that's a good thing remains to be seen)

I would only bother downloading photoshop if you plan on using it again.

  • 1. it's expensive
    2. It's a large file to download
3, It's for serious photo editing, for changing file types you could use a much simpler program

That being said, I wouldn't recommend paint for saving files as anything, especially jpegs.

Aye, paint doesn't work so well for .jpegs I use Macromedia Fireworks:)
I tried to upload an avatar of mine that was a .jpeg though, and the forum told me that .JPEG wasn't a supported format...

Silly questiuon, but I am new here... why am I not allowed to use an animated gif as my avatar?

Two reasons, really.

  1. By default, it was turned off.
  2. Most animations in avatars (and signatures) are distracting / attention-grabbing, where the purpose of a forum is really to read the posts not marvel at each other's images (which is what our upcoming gallery.thn will be for).

That said, some of this may be up for review as we settle in. You may have guessed that this particular instance of THN Games is really pretty new so many things are bedding down.

okey pokey. This is all I want to use as my avatar. Makes quite a few people think they are seeing things ;)

:) It's amusing, I'll happily grant you. It's also exactly the sort of avatar that fits "attention-grabbing". Hold on to it for the moment and we'll see what where we go with images in general around the forums.

I wouldn't mind thatbloke's ava, but i think pubic_w's is too distracting. If there has to be one simple rule, i'd prefer not to have animated gifs. The good must suffer the bad. :)

Is it possible to limit animations to, say, 3 frames, with a minimum amount of time between them? Complicated, but it would separate the hyperactive from the subtle. :)

Or animated gifs have to be moderator approved, perhaps?

Fuzzy, have you tried renaming it to .jpg?

Paint actually changed the .jpg extension to .JPEG, which tends to cause problems all over the place, even at places that support the .jpeg extension. I've been using Fireworks for all of my image editing anymore, so I don't get any problems :)

Perhaps. I think that's going to end up being a game of how it feels on the day without definite criteria of what is acceptable and what is not, though.

I'm inclined to the same simple rule -- no animated avatars.
