Independent Games Festival

While doing the rounds, I came across Gamespot's article on the Independent Games Festival that features games from smaller developers, often school or college kids, with talent.

Some you've seen or heard of before. Others... well, not likely!

Personally, I'm going to check out:

  • The Awakening - zombies, uh, more zombies, and barricaded doors! Multiplayer UT2004 mod.
  • Eclipse - HL2 fantasy total conversion, single player as far as I can tell.
  • Goliath - stand-alone vehicle combat game, but that doesn't seem to be all there is... multiplayer and singleplayer.
  • The Soulkeeper - UT2004 mod with swords and sorcery and dragon mounts. (their website is Flash hell)

Might also take a peer at Plan of Attack and NERO (again).

If that's the mod I'm thinking of, it's also lag hell. Like, you might get 10 frames per second if you're lucky.

I played this awhile back when it was first released. It was pretty buggy. They might've fixed it by now though.

Ive recently played Goliath.
Crap at single player.
Excellenet as multiplayer.
If you can get a game with all 16 slots filled, then fun is guaranteed.

P.S. If you all attack at the same time, you will lose. Some of the team will need to complete various tasks, while some need to slow down the Goliath.

I am a great fan and long time tester for a company called Introversion (website), who made the games Uplink and their latest game, Darwinia. They are up for 4 awards at the IGF, and also for the "Audience Award" (ie, public vote) - link. I know this is a bit of a shameless plug post, but it is in the "Other games" section and Introversion are one of the few great game developments that believe games should be fun, not just an income. There are only ~5 people in the whole company, and they relie on word of mouth to survive.

So I'm asking, if you aren't going to vote for anything else, try the demo of Darwinia (available either through Steam or on the net for windows, as well as downloadable for Mac and Linux), and if you like it, vote for it lhere. And buy it :D

Either way, try the demo. They are great games! Cheers for reading, and I hope you don't mind this post. It is about IGF so, you know ;)

I loved Darwinia when I played the demo so I bought it and loved it even more (in a safe and non physical way of course). :)

Cos it aint out yet and isn't to do with IGF. But now you mentioned it!

Introversion's next game is DEFCON. It is pretty much the Global Thermonuclear War from the film, Wargames. But with planes and nuclear submarines and stuff :D

Looks awesome, like all their other games. Info at Wikipedia and lots of links on the Defcon forums. Go take a look :)

In reply to the first post, the results are in!

Darwinia is the WINNER!

From Gamasutra, arwinia has won the $20,000 (!) Seumas McNally Grand Prize in the IGF Main Competition. Well done Iv, you deserve it :) And by the sounds of it, lots of other people who went to IGF thought so to!

Braid won the Innovation in Game Design.
Weird Worlds: Return to Infinite Space got the Innovation in Audio.
Dad 'N Me won Best Web Browser Game.
The Audience Award was won by Dofus
And Dodge That Anvil won the AdultSim.com award.

Well done to all the Independent developers, the world needs more of you!

Ach. Lucky you.

Unfortunately I didn't get into IMDB by beta-testing, but then again all I beta-tested was exoSyphen Studio's Digital Hazard. :S
