... has the "post reply" button that used to appear at the bottom of every forum thread suddenly disappeared??? It is slightly inconvenient having to scroll back up to the top to make a reply. I use the amber scheme, if that helps.

Yeah the post reply button has been removed to encourage people to use the quick reply button on a post so that things are neater for people using threaded mode (people should be replying to a specific post rather than the basic linear method).

the point is, you click the "quick reply" button on the post that you mean to answer to, not the last one.

While reading a thread, try clicking on the Display Modes link and switch from Linear to Threaded mode. You should then get a better idea of what we are trying to achieve.

I don't get threaded mode, it confuses the hell outta me... maybe i just don't like change.

It is simple once you get to know it. It displays which posts have been replied to which posts. Say someone makes a post about their favourite food, and two people reply saying yes I agree or not. Then a third person can have the choice of whether to reply to the first, second or third post. Threaded mode will show which post they replied to.
It's an advanced method of posting on a forum. For another example, I am specificaly replying to your post about not understanding threaded mode. If you switch to threaded mode you will see my post is linked underneath your post.

I have tried both and personally prefer the Linear mode. It's all about personal preference.

I prefer linear mode because it's what I've used on almost every other forum I've been to. I do try to use the

though if I reply to a specific post, and I'll quote the post as well if it wasn't one of the most recent ones so those using linear mode won't be too confused.

Well sometimes it isnt appropriate to reply to any posts, yet still appropriate to post in a thread...

That can't surely be the case unless your wanting to wander off topic? If there are no posts to reply to then surely the first post in the thread is the one to reply to?

There is a mod to allow the first post of a thread to appear on every page of that thread, in Linear mode. That might help here too...
