Ok, trying to burn a dvd as a video dvd so i can watch it on me dvd player. I have made the dvd in nero by merging 2 video files i had before, together. this bit is fine and i skip through the steps till burning.

Then i start the burning and it says transcripting or sumit and says it will take 1 hour so i bog off to watch TV but when i come back i find my computer has turned off!!!

and no it hasnt finished as only half an hour had past and the option to turn off on completion had not been checked

Transcoding. It's converting one video format (in this case probably compressed avi or mpeg) into another (the format DVD's work on).

If the computer turned off, rather then rebooted, then your best bet is to sit there with a magazine or book, and watch it the whole time. If it dies, what was it doing just before it died? However, if it goes just turn itself off, odd are a dodgy component/power interrupt/etc., as Windows rarely "turns off", it more "dies and tries to cope, or reboots".

If it reboots, odds are that Windows got the BSoD, and auto-rebooted. Right click My Computer, Properties, Advanced, Settings under Startup and Recovery, untick the "Automatically restart" checkbox. If it does crash then, you will get an error message. Either write it down, or take a readable photo of it, and post it up here. I'll then be in a better position to tell you the problem :)

Um isn't it just the settings in desktop under screensaver/power settings?

Some can be set to turn off after a certain amount of inactivity.
