LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth 2

Hey guys and gals,

I'd just like to put a short(ish) post up here to try and draw your attention to a little game that has managed to capture Piacular's and my attention over the past few weeks.

As you may or may not have noticed on x-fire I have been putting in a bit of game time battling it out online playing LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth 2.

Set in Tolkiens fantasy world. This is a real time strategy game in the classic sense that borrows heavily from games like Starcraft, AOE and the Total War series.

Units are constructed in battle groups that vary in size depending on the strength of the individuals. Varying from the massed hoards of goblins to the single but devastating Mameluks.

The game lets you play out a total of six races - Men of the West, Elves, Dwarves, The Legions of Mordor, Isengard and the Goblin Hoardes. Although the troop variations of these races are quite close, each race holds it's own distinct playing style.

For example the Men of the West are a basic staple; Sturdy troops, large variety, strong heros, strong powers but can take time to maximise their potential. Isengard; VERY strong troops that can be maximised quickly, few heros, good powers but no heavyweights.

So far I have found the Isengard the hardest to fight as their base troop is so strong that the early/mid game is very tough against them.

In all though the game is very well balanced and victories feel like true progression but losing a battle in the field does not mean that a match is instantly over.

One small gripe I have is the ease at which you can rush win in this game. The way that the resources are harvested in this game means that a couple of weak troops rushed into an opponents base in the early minutes can guarantee a win unless your opponent is prepared. Fortunately I have found that rushing is a high risk strategy as if you can hold off against it you usually have a sizeable army at the end which you can waltz into an enemies base and make him suffer. :D

I know this isn't the most comprehensive review and I've probably raised more questions then I have answers but hopefully that might persuade you to pick up a copy and try and find out the answers for yourself.

If you do then hopefully we can start organising some LOTR events for THN.

Cheers,

pHatBambi.

Thanks for the heads up, Bambi. I was actually planning on buying LOTR:BfME 2 for the ol' 360, because it's been recieved quite well. Ive always been a bit sceptical about console RTS's due to the control system, but apparently this game pulls it off rather well. That, and I thoroughly enjoyed BfME 1 on the PC. The Balrog was so ultimately decimatingly cool, so was the Eye of Sauron. Unfortunately, my PC's degrading performance prevented me from finally finishing the campaign, but this console release provides a good opportunity for me to experience it properly.

EDIT: I think a cool feature would have been to be able to play PC gamers from the 360 and vice versa, that way I could play you guys as well :) I'm not sure if they implemented that in this game, though.
