Magic the Gathering Natter thread

Well im bored as hell at work...
But i play alot of magic when i can get away with it. So i thought i'd start a thread to disscuss the game of pure "hate" (magic). More swayed on the physical card side as opposed to the poota game variant.

So to start i thought i'd treat you one of my "I hate your f-ing guts combo's"

You will need...

Training Grounds (U) - enchantment
All creatures you control's activated abilities cost 2 less to play to a minimum of 1

Khalni Gem (4) - Artifact
Tap: Produces two mana of any colour

Filigree Sages (3)(U) - Artifact Creature
(2)(U) Untap target artifact for

Grindclock (2) - Artifact
Tap: Add a charge counter to grind clock
Tap: Mill target for the number of charges on grind clock

First off, the Khalni gem, Training grounds, filigree sages gives infinate mana
as KG produces 2 mana, TG reduces FS ability to cost one, so one mana is usable, the other goes into untapping the gem, rinse and repeat.

It also provides infinate artifact untaps, so using both in FS (as the ability does not tap them) allows you to charge up a grind clock and mill as many times as you like in a turn - good bye opponents deck.

Importantly the infinate loop is user controlled so is not an instant lose.

Usually this combo comes out in turn 4 so it's not overly fast, nor slow. Caused my cousin to rage quit when he realised what was happening!

Not tournament legal... ever!

Only recently started playing MTG myself after a friend at work introduced me to it, so i've not played much IRL (though I have bought some cards), but I have the Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 game on steam, and if you also have that, feel free to give me a poke if you see me online and we can play there.

Incidentally, had a few EPIC games of two-headed giant on Steam with DocBot last night, aside from the utterly massive noobfail moment of his, was damned good fun :)

Im guite luck as to have aout 8 mates geeky enough to play with, one of which used to own the local geek shop! So got alot of singles and bits there.
Get magic on nearly every weekend in the "Hall of Hate" (my garage)

I have the duels o the planeswalkers game, i do like it but im all about making a deck from nothing and making it work. Variety is amazing in the game. Which is not reflected as much on the poota game, alot of cards i love are not in it :(

Will poke you if im about for some online hate though.

I started playing when revised came out, kept playing for a while and realised their business model changed, stopped playing. Now we're back to playing but with house rules that keep combos like that out.

The most fun deck I ever played was a five-colour-turns-one-colour celestial dawn deck. Oh what fun I had. And then I sold off all my dual lands to afford a trip. Now I just keep a red-green deck that could probably do with some updating... especially since it's vintage and have barely no cards newer than a blastoderm..

I still have a white green deck that i'd pit against anyone on THN and bet it would put up a good fight. A lot of tough cards went into that one. All collected from booster packs too, none of this buy this that and the other. This was before the internet boom.

Yea so now I'm hopelessly addicted to MTG...

I own over 2000 cards already, and have gotten 2 more of my friends playing too...

Got some quite valuable cards in there too, like a Sorin, Lord of Innistrad and a Snapcaster mage too :D

I've a box full of second series cards - not played it in about 15 years though so the cards are all very old now and probably not much use against later (more powerful) editions.

You'd be surprised. Some of those cards could be VERY valuable.

Fun fact, the only stuff I understand on that card is the initial mana cost. I guess the game really has moved far far beyond where it was when I played.

2nd edition, if i'm not entirely mistaken, still had the "power9" in it, so if you have any on the mox's, time walk, ancestral recal, or a black lotus i STRONGLY suggest checking ebay, as some of those go for ridiculous amounts and are sought after in good condition!

and dont be fooled by power, while the generic creature's were worse than we see in magic these days some of the older cards are stupidly overpowered to the point theyre banned in most formats :)

ancestral recall alone is worth £300+, might be worth checking through that collection at some point :D
