Making a difference with Money - what would you do ?

In a hypothetical future you are given 10 million of the queens finest monetary units.

If you were to spend this money only on making the world a better place in some (small or large way), what would you do with it and how would this improve the things ?

Given how far money goes in different countries I would avoid spending my money in the UK as sadly 10 million would not go far here. For maximum value I would spend it in Africa on Solar and Wind Power in rural areas.

I'd have to pick areas that were relatively stable politically which does limit things somewhat.

My first thought was wireless mesh networks to bring rural villages on-line but I figure without power and the fact that computers would possibly be sold for money for essentials then power is a more useful entity to provide. There is also the fact that Mobile phones will soon provide internet access for some in Africa and thats probably a much better means than wireless right now.

well if I had to put it to a good cause I would direct it at creating more grass roots sporting opportunities and sporting areas/clubs - in my opinion there are not enough sports clubs (certainly in my area) and I think that it would give younger people something to aim for other than academic achievement (which is not right for everybody).

Half of the problem I have seen is actually getting access to such facilities and the clubs/organisations that use them - most clubs are more than happy to take on members of all abilities and yet alot of people who could do it would miss out.

...but only after I buy myself a fat gaming rig first :D

Hmmm 10 million, not sure whether it would be enough but our main problem on earth I would say is resources. Everything is limited by who has what and whether there is enough.

If you read Time by Stephen Baxter he puts forward an interesting idea (which gets side tracked later on) get resources from in space and expand outwards using them.....

Wether you could do it or not? dunno. But a thought nonetheless.

Frankly, 10 million quid is not enough to solve anything, so I'd probably hire a good financial advisor and invest it to make even more money. Only then would I start helping people. I know this sounds like I'm a selfish bitch, but if you look at the situation rationally this would be for the greatest good - provided I don't nab the interests for myself of course.

Ahey, :)

One word: teachers.

More speciffically, I would go out and find the least the developed region in a well developed country, and fund some local shcools and teachers.

No, it's not very global, but it is immediate and it is effective, and like Angelic says, there's only so far you can go with 10 mil.

I'm with Bradstreet: education all the way.

Cheers,
J.

I'd blow the whole lot on an expensive rig, an expensive car and an expensive house, and lots of expensive holidays.

Now, I know you said

spend this money only on making the world a better place

but as anyone who's been on Teamspeak with me will testify, an unhappy Razaak does not make the world a nice place to be. Happy Razaak = win. I rest my case. Please forward the cheque to me at your earliest convenience.

Apologies in advance, but I can't resist....a wether is a castrated male sheep. I suspect that's not what you had in mind.....or did you??? :D

Anyway, what to do with £10 million - invest in a company looking at alternative energy sources, especially wave/tidal power, as it's probably the most reliable source yet the least exploited.

Id invest in a big laser gun which kills all chavs. That would instantly make the UK a better place at least: And I'd like to see a good argument if you disagree with this statement!

Hmmm... I know you're being facetious (or do I?) but, here goes: laser-gunning chavs, whilst potentially a fun pastime for all the family, does nothing to tackle the root social and economic problems that lead to chav-dom. Shoot one chav today and two will spring up in his/her place tomorrow; shoot (in a more metaphorical sense) at deprivation, poor housing, and a failing education system, and create a chav-less future. (I may need to polish this more before applying for a career as a political sloganeer).

But if you do that then you fail to continue the fun pastime for future generations to gun down baby chavs? :p
