Some of you may remember me talking about Men of War in a previous thread (Which I've lost). I told you all how awesome it was and you refused to believe me. Cretins!
Well the standalone expansion pack has been released and it's damn awesome. This one is entirely single player which is perfect as multiplayer on the original suffers from Hardcore Hero Syndrome. You take command of the Black Jackets. The marines of the Russian Army. You take part in missions against the Romanians and eventually the Germans. In the original games ranged from stealth operations with 6 or so highly specialized men to 40 upwards of bread and butter troops and a few tanks. I've only played the first 3 missions and the first two I had about 40 of the bread and butter guys and the one I'm stuck on gives me 8 troops total.
The first two missions were linked and were an absolute bomb. I took command of the landing dudes while the ships behind me bombarded the guys. I took the first row of defences and about halfway through it the Romanians counter attacked with lots of bastardly tanks. I scrounged up an AT rifle and a few AT grenades and managed to hold them off. Next part saw me attacking the village on from the trenches. I was able to salvage a tank and god damn it saved my ass. I used it to take out a hill entrenched with artillery and turn it against the bastards while the considerably useful AI took the village while I supported the flanks. I oversaw the landing of more troops and just about held off another counter attack. Bad. Ass.
The mission I'm on now is an absolute motherfuck. I start off with 8 guys and manage to nick an armoured car with a small cannon. I position 4 guys in cover and use the car to cover them in turn. I shit you not when these 4 guys and a car had to hold off 50 guys and 4 armoured cars as well as MG emplacements and AT guns. In the end I did pretty well and only lost 5 guys. Thinking that was over I gave myself a high five but then I'm told I need to defend against an armoured convoy?
Well shit. I take one of the AT guns I haven't mullered and place it in some bushes to hit the guys in the flank. I give one of my guys 8 AT grenades and hide him in a bush they'll come past. I give the other guy a few AT grenades and an AT rifle and stick him where he can shoot them in the ass. So what'll come? Maybe a tank and some supply trucks. No biggy. Fuck that! 4 tanks, 2 light tanks and 2 supply trucks? Explain to me how I only lost one man I'll never know. Thank God that's the end of that mission.
It's not? Oh, what now? Escape? That doesn't sound to bad. Oh. Through that military encampment. I'll just take a shortcut through that field behind the base and the tanks. Oh, it's mined. I fucking shit you not. My guy ran into a mine and blew back about 20 metres then got up again, took a health pack and he was grand. There's nothing I can do except pick up some dropped AT grenades and MGs and head towards the camp. I'll let you know how I get on.
Have some adventures of your own and buy the damn thing. It's only £20 and you can get the original for £12.99 on Steam. You won't regret it!
