IS AWESOME!
Sorry about that, just had to get it off my chest.
Men of War is a WW2 strategy game (Did I hear one of you bastards sigh?!) which sees you control a bunch of men of war ranging from 6 men to 50 odd.
You obviously haven't heard me... you control. That's right. Little Ivan who can't hit the treads off that tank? You can do it better! Well no, actually, you can't. The tank is just too far away and the armour penetration at this distance is pants. Alas, I digress...
AI
Game developers are fond of that word. Before Men of War I had yet to find a game that actually had intelligent AI. Sure, CoH boasted it, but in the same way I boast I am a kickass driver, I'm really not (I always have right of way)! Take CoH where you have a squad of two panzerschreks and you tell them to fire at that Sherman. Well they'll "intelligently" run for cover. Yes, they'll run through enemy lines, past MGs and into the tracks of the tank to get cover. Then fire the rocket. Next January. Men of War is so different. For a start men don't deviate too far from their original position unless you strictly order them too. If you have a prized Bazooka and you tell him to go prone behind this wall he will and won't get up unless you tell him to. Far less frustrating.
Pathfinding is a beaut too. Sorta. Hop a couple of dudes in a truck, attach an AT gun to the end of it, left click somewhere it will intelligently navigate cover and not get stuck. Though it will drive through fucking walls and supplies of AT Mines (!!!) to get to it. But hey, that's what direct control is for. Anything the AI can do, you can do better.
Gameplay
Ooh, the gameplay is awesome. I'm on the second Russian mission where I'm tasked with defending a train while supplies are loaded. I have about 70 men I can command. I've taken an MG and moved it up to the front line behind some sandbags because MGs are awesome. Oh, yeah, bullets are actually useful in this game. If you stand up in combat, you're dead. A second in front of an MG position will see you in a box ready to be shipped home. Anyway, I'd gotten the train 69% (teehee) loaded when I noticed I was being over run at the top flank. My MG was sitting there, not firing. I direct controlled it only to hear the dreaded "click! click!" of an empty chamber. I had run out of bullets! How could I oversee such a critical thing?! No time to think about that, I needed ammo and I needed it yesterday. I sent Pvt. Vahikov (Yes, troops are all individually named so you think twice about throwing them about) down to the depot to get some ammo. Longest minute of my life. He came back with about 1000 rounds in his little Communist hands and loaded them into the MG.
Ratatatatata "Nein! Scheiße! Ein Kommunisten!" "Die Facist pig dogs!"
That's stuff you don't get in conventional RTS! Name me one other game where you've had to hop your commander into a jeep, emergency extract an AT gun and crew amongst a terrific firefight, have an enemy PzKfw IV fire an AP shell through your jeep, hitting a water tower behind it, destroying it and simultaneously throwing the sniper off who was perched on top of it. Yeah. This shit happens every minute!
Other stuff
The voice acting is the best I've heard in any game. Ever. It's hard to command your gritty troops while they speak in broken English. If you're unsure about buying this, buy it for the voice acting. It won't let you down!
During my train station defence there was a short break in the fighting. During this time I hijacked an enemy tank with a broken turret and brought it back to base. There I repaired it and used it against my attackers! Well, I planned to but an AP shell ricocheted of my AT gun and destroyed the hull. Before this my troops, low on ammo, had been salvaging their comrades and dead soldiers for whatever they could find. Proper awesome.
Vehicle damage is awesome too. Different locations on a vehicle have different armour thicknesses. Say you're trying to destroy a tank that keeps moving away every time you try and throw an AT 'nade at it. It's a simple case of knocking the treads off the tank. You then run up your infantry, click the AT 'nade and get ripped to shreds by the co-axial machine gun.
I was playing a game where my tank got it's treads blown off. I had to get it repaired or I was toast. I got one man out to repair, got another who took the rear co-axial MG and held them off while it was repaired. Then I ran over some houses!
Seriously, get the demo and love it. It's proper genius. I can't comment on MP yet as I haven't ventured that far. From what I've heard it's good and goes up to 8v8 combat!
