Hi all,
As i'm a complete fool, i've been bashing around on bf2 without, i repeat WITHOUT a microphone, which has meant i cant acknowledge orders or laugh at you when you do something rather silly :D
so, what i want to know is, does anyone have any recomendations for manufacturer/model for a microphone headset for me to pruchase?

Cheers for any help

I go through a pair of headphones each year, pretty much. I'm not sure what it is... just poor build quality or overuse or... dunno. Still, the ones I've used can all be seen on the link below:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/Online_Catalogue_Stereo_Headsets_with_Microphone_502.html

In particular:

  • Plantronics Audio 60 Headset -- acceptable sound quality, adjustable boom mic is a boon to start with, but then it gets a little loose and you need to twist it in its housing to get it to stay still (but that works!), but gave up after a year of pick-up-put-down and pull-on-the-cable-when-gaming-cause-it's-trapped-on-the-desk action. Mic tends to pick up breath/wind/fans in the room too easily, but fine for other noise reduction.
  • Plantronics Audio 90 Headset -- much the same as the above on quality (perhaps a slight improvement?) but if you wear glasses this one has a tendency to push the sticks of your glasses against your head... painful after a few hours, I find! The mic doesn't suffer slippage, but it's also less adjustable. Gave up in a year of the same use described above.
  • Altec AHS302 Folding Headset -- actually got these to take with me for work and not really used them much. Quality feels comparable to the above but the fit over my ears isn't great (big head... ) as the band goes behind my head and needs to drop low, giving very little "hang" room on my ears. Otherwise okay so far... only been in light use for around a month.

Also, not on the list above, I've tried surround sound in headphones.

  • Zalman ZM-RS6F+M Real Surround Sound Headphones "Theatre 6" -- I'm constantly ambivalent over these. First, they are no replacement for a set of 5.1 desktop speakers, but if that's not an option (too noisy, not enough space, etc) then they do okay as a backup option. I've been playing all my games wearing these for the past four/five months or so. Again, if you wear glasses, they can put pressure just at the wrong place, but you can open them up quite well and let them hang a little loosely to take that pressure off. Microphone is a separate lead that could be attached to your clothing or, as I do, to the headset lead. It's not a boom mic, but it works really well regardless. Aside from the fiddly extra cable, this is one of its best features. Sound quality is fine, but I was hoping for more at the price. Some surround effects work better than others. If it had been at the same price as the Plantronics stuff above I'd be pleased, but as it is I'm very slightly disappointed.

People say that the Sennheiser headphones (and headsets?) are good quality for sound. No idea on build quality, but you'd hope they'd be good as they're a little more expensive than the others, generally. I've an impression (unjustified?) that Logitech headsets give people problems.

Anyways, hope that helps!

I'm using the Sennheiser PC150's -we've three pairs of them here and they are awsome. I've been using them for around 3 years and they are still in perfect nick (and I'm not generally light handed with these things).

They are pricey but in my opinion they are worth every penny for the ammount of time I spend wearing them.

I believe there are now the PC160's with bigger bins if you want more comfort as well.

My headset cost me one pound from a pound store... it works for me as I dont use the headphones part... I just put it round my neck and line up the mic in front of my mouth :)

No-one seems to complain that my sound quality is crappy or anything

Well thanks guys, you've all been a great help, all i've got to do now, is wait for my student loan, and then see how much i can afford to spend, then you'll be able to hear my glourious voice screaming at you "medic!!"

MadGinga. I've got a ?15 Creative headset that I picked up from Dixons. It works fine and he pretty decent sound and build quality.

I just suppose it comes down to how much you can spend.

At ?15 though I'm sure you wouldn't have to wait for your loan to come through.
