[EVE] Minm Level 4 mission ship options

I am now working my skills towards a level 4 mission ship and have been looking at my options and I am surpriesed at the lack of actual options available.

Out of the 3 Minm BS's the Typhoon's and the Tempest's defenses realy seem to be lacking (around 200-250 Sustained Defense) compared to the mael (350-400) but they are the only ships i have been able to create close range AC fits for as the Mael is way to slow to attempt up close combat. In EFT what is a good solid Sustained Defense value to have for level 4 missions?

with the EFT fits (All level 5 Skills, no rigs, not including drones and cap stable):

Typhoon (4 AC's, 4 Torps) : Combat Range - 3-5Km, DPS - 452, Volley - 2950, Speed - 424 m/s, Sustained Defense - 211.

Tempest (6 AC's, 2 Torps) : Combat Range - 8-12Km, DPS - 522, Volley - 2910, Speed - 398 m/s, Sustained Defense - 245.

Mael (8 Arty's) : Combat Range - 85Km, DPS - 247, Volley - 2823, Speed - 118 m/s, Sustained Defense - 373.

I have also looked at the field command ship.

Sleipnir (7 AC's + Gang modual): Combat Range - 3-5Km, DPS - 347, Volley - 1055, Speed - 505 m/s, Sustained Defense - 351.

So far the field command ship looks like a good option for the AC boat mission runner but the mael looks like the eaiser (boring) option for level 4.

Sorry for going on :p. Any one got suggestions about other ships that can do level 4's and are fun to fly, I love my Assault boat for level 2's and my Battle cruiser AC boat for level 3's.

Atm thinking of just starting with the boring but safe option in the mael then go into the Vargur for fun later on

what the hell are you fitting on the Mael to get that little tank??? mine with EM\Therm sits at close to 1200DPS tank perma boost with about 350DPS on the turrets\drones

it "only" does 612DPS with max skills...and can out damage that with just 6 TII autocannons and faction ammo it's cap stable at 33% and tanks about 420DPS with "uniform"

those are my "takes" on the minnie BS, and at that size rigging them is a must. as for the tank i have a faction setup for the Maelstrom that hits 2600DPS tank for guristas though even with only half of it i hit 1700 :p

Just played in EFT for a bit this time using rigs. Is there a reason u use the phased plasma ammo in the arty's? I would of thought longer range with Nuclear ammo would of been better (I don't know how far things start away from you in level 4 missions).

I really liked your mael fit, and using the rigs I can use the X-large booster as I was trying to be cap stable with out rigs so only used the Large booster. The fit I have made now using ur’s as a template:

I looked at your tempest fit and it seems you have mentioned 7 low slot moduals and it only has 6. Again using yours as a template I came up with:

I would prefer the Tempest over the Mael but the Mael seems like a safer option as the tempest being up close in the fight and have less effective HP's and defense will have more chance to pop, and with the frigs in level 4's scrambeling and webbing getting in close might be difficult.

To be honest guys, i fly a maelstrom for missions and it doesn't fit XL boosters, nor does it fit Howitzers.

*goes and retrives the fitting*

Lows:
5 x Power Diagnostic System II

Mids:
100mn Afterburner II
Large Shield Booster II
2 x Cap Recharger II
2 x Invulnerability Field II

Highs:
8 x 800mm Repeating Artillery II (that's autocannons to the uninitiated:P)

Rigs:
3 x Projectile Ambit Extension I

Drones:
20 mixed T2 light drones.

Gives me 467 dps and 292 sustained tank and top speed of just over 300m/s with my skills.

The high top speed combined with crazy falloff on the autos means even with EMP ammo you can engage at quite a long range, yet keep high damage.

Lowest Def - 270, Highest Def - 457

Range with EMP L - 29 Km, DPS - 358 (Without drones)

I dont know all the details about it though, for level 4 missions i use a nighthawk(command ship) this ship is the size of a cruiser, uses a passive tank, and has 6-7 heavy missile launchers, its a slow ship, with a small cargo, but for cost its very viable, and you can get the 2 relevent shield resists over 85 for every mission.
