<--- Needs one, what are people playing that isn't WoW/EVE?

Star Trek online is worth the try. (Demo at least, to see if you like it.) Demo gives the basic tutorial + a couple of real missions.

If you want a bit of more in depth details:

Ship missions (Accually take control of your ship (Or throw it on auto fire after going "ATTACK!") ) Generally Escort, "Go attack this." and the like.

BUT, you also get "Open Instances" whitch are like Raids that anyone can join (Even though you can solo them, they take AGES.), basicly, you Warp Into the system, and you auto join a group, then, well. Go through the mission.

But you also get areas you can just about solo alone, but don't auto group you.

"Away" missions: Run around, shooting, normal MMO style, but with Laz0rs, And more indepth stuff. (Meleeing (Punching / hitting with butt of rifle) will knock back. Flanking Damage (More damage if you shoot at them from behind.) stuff like that.)

Again, you can get a sort of "No auto grouping" missions.

Quests are your normal MMO style (Escort, rescue, stuff like that.) But most of them are multi part. So "Patrol <Name> sector." where you would be told to go to maybe 5 "Planets" (By "Planets" I mean both Space and GRound) and go do a mission there, then you get told "Well done captain, starfleet, blah blah" Then you warp out, and go to the next one.

I'm afraid i can't give you much more info then that (Only level..12 or so.) Oh right, the leveling: 1-10 Lieutenant (And basc ship), once you spend the right amount of skill points, you get Promoted, so technically 11-20 Lt Commander (2nd type of ship. And Picards style of Enterprise too, i belive.) blah blah. 50 levels, 5 levels of ships.

Uhm..Ships: Science Vessel (What i use.) More emphasis on "Debuffs" and "Buffs" and the like, Can also target "Lesser" systems e.g. Engines, Weapons, Shields (IF you're lucky, disabling them.)

Escort: PewPew mainly.

And Cruiser: I belive it's a mix between the two, balanced, but has more Engineers on.

Bridge Members add to your abilites in space, and back you up on "Away" missions, Same general things as your classes.

Ship weapons, Forward and Rearward. (Phasers generally have a 250 Degree Arc, so Phasers can more or less ALWAYS be fired, Missiles and the like normally have a smaller type.)

Ship combat can somtimes be a bit slow (Turning.) but is also uber fun.

You can generally have 3 Types of Bridge Officers at the start, increasing as your ship grows (Up to 9, by the looks of this ship chart.)

Guilds are called "Fleets", you have a set "Hearthstone" to Earth Station (Has Auction House, Bank, vendors, everything. Think... Dalaran, if you know wow.)

Uhm..You can customise ships (with a degree of customization, of course.) E.G. You cant put Cruiser parts on a Science Vessel, and vice versa. And you can only use parts from that rank of ships.

Think thats everything that you would really wanna know..

Ship chart for reference.

Oh. And if you buy from Steam (The basic package.) you get a uber Chest, and a Turret for your ship, that will last a while.

EDIT: If you wanna watch it being played + talk on TS with that person, I'll be happy to throw you a broadcast link.

Bearing in mind that I'm both feeling very anti-social and have been out of MMOs for a while, couple for consideration:

Fallen Earth

Post-apocalyptic theme. Hence guns and sticks both feature. Mounts available early, which is good because the world feels pretty expansive. Population is fairly low; good if you like a quiet game, bad if you're wanting groups. That said, inside the first 8 or so levels I only found one group quest. Rich crafting system. Slower advancement (more in line with EQ than WoW). Low on zone variety: one bit of wasteland seems much like another. Competent MMO, but the company has had some troubles recently; looked like they might recover, but that's just a guess. They do a free 10 day trial. Not quite enough to keep me there after the trial, partly because I was distracted by...

Wurm Online

Java/browser based MMO focusing heavily on crafting and settlement construction. Some fighting. No quests to speak of. Possibly closer to A Tale in the Desert than anything else; not really a traditional MMO when compared to WoW or EVE (or EQ, or Fallen Earth, or...). Free to play but with caps on skills unless you pay. In a few days, wasn't even close to skill caps. Expect to spend a lot of time chopping trees or digging earth. Potentially very social but practically quite solitary (in my experience, see disclaimer at top). Death will come quickly and potentially frequently. An MMO without crutches; community is generally very friendly and helpful, though, even if they're not actually turning up to assist. Might be worth a look?

And, as TB says, Guild Wars. Somehow never quite get started with GW, though...

Right, Guild Wars it is!

Now to remember my account details :P

Tried the STO beta and was very meh about the whole thing. Too slow for my liking.

How is it slow? Space Combat? Yeah, it is a tiny bit slow. But totally worth it.

I've started a new char for all this excitement a while back. I'll sit down and power level him properly soon to catch up with you guys. Southern Shiverpeaks still atm?

Yep! Well, D and Psi at least. Fist and myself are now at the Ring of Fire, but we haven't actually done anything yet. Hey, if you're doing some early game stuff then I made a new monk that could tag along. Did you apply for the guild?
