Check this out:

In the next major content patch, we intend to adjust mount requirements to further improve the leveling experience in World of Warcraft. In addition, cast times for summoning all mounts will be reduced to 1.5 seconds, down from 3 seconds. The following is a breakdown of the upcoming cost and level requirement changes we are making for each riding skill.

Apprentice Riding (Skill 75)

•60% land mount speed
•Requires level 20
•Cost: 4 gold
•Mount cost: 1 gold
•Mail will be sent to players at level 20 guiding them to the riding trainer

Journeyman Riding (Skill 150)

•100% land mount speed
•Requires level 40
•Cost: 50 gold
•Mount cost: 10 gold
•Mail will be sent to players at level 40 guiding them back to the riding trainer

Expert Riding (Skill 225)

•150% flying mount speed; 60% land mount speed
•Requires level 60
•Cost: 600 gold (faction discounts now apply)
•Mount Cost: 50 gold
•Can now be learned in Honor Hold (Alliance) or Thrallmar (Horde)

Artisan Riding (Skill 300)

•280% flying mount speed; 100% land mount speed
•Requires level 70
•Cost: 5,000 gold (faction discounts now apply)
•Mount Cost: 100 gold

Am I missing something or is it more than just the level requirements changing here?

For currently, the "slow" flying mounts are 60% speed. On this list, 150%..

It's cool they are changing it, just wish it had been sooner (level 65 and rising, no flying mount for me til 70.. and then can't use in northrend anyway.. i r cry)

No noted changes for requirements for northrend cold weather flying? :(

Whcih faction sells the riding skills (i.e. who should we aim to reach exalted with)?

O.O

Good spot, I never noticed that.

And you would appear to be correct.

That does mean that epic flyers decrease in value, in terms of the relative speed increase that you get for it compared with the regular flying skill....

One of my main gripes with the mount system is that you hit 70, you "can" buy artisan skill + mount for 5100g, but what on earth is the point as you'll then head to northrend and be unable to fly at all.

The other changes are nice, but this is still a flaw that imo should be addressed.

Either change the artisan skill to include cold weather and be trainable at 75 (not 76). Or allow us to fly in northrend on the slower flying mounts at 70.

Maybe they are doing the latter, depends how much you read into this:

Expert Riding (Skill 225)

•150% flying mount speed; 60% land mount speed
•Requires level 60
•Cost: 600 gold (faction discounts now apply)
•Mount Cost: 50 gold
•Can now be learned in Honor Hold (Alliance) or Thrallmar (Horde)

Note the last point. Why? Why can you train this, when you can't fly in northrend.. or can you? ;)

You can fly in Outland :p

You can be in Outland from level 58, fly around in outland from level 60. 600G will be very easily obtainable through questing as soon as you hit outland, and this will make it faster to get through outland.

then in Northrend the reason the cold weather flying is required, I believe, is so that you don't skip parts of the content, and also to up the difficulty level in the starting areas somewhat.

Once I hit 80, I had the Howling Fjord left to do and (ignoring that I was level 80) it was WAY easier to do and get around by using my flyer than it was by using my ground mount - but on the same token, on some quests that tell you to "go to area x and pick up this" there would be an item that drops off the surrounding mobs and is a quest item that then starts the next chain of 10 quests you need... or you are supposed to meet an NPC in that same area and I found that by using my flyer to go straight in and out I sometimes missed those parts.

All your points about why northrend should remain level 76 (I assume that's what you're saying) can also be applied to why you shouldn't be able to fly at 60 in outlands. Here's my argument for why if you can afford it, you should be able to fly (even at 280%) as soon as you hit 60:

It's fun.

Pure and simple. And lets face it, only players who have already hit 80 at least once are going to have the gold spare to be able to do this.

And it seems Blizzard somewhat agree with me by enabling flight early on in outlands, though it is too late for me personally. By allowing flight at 60 they do kind of solve the issue I've highlighted with the shift to northrend where you can't fly coinciding with the same level you actually get to fly at. But for players in my shoes it's just frustrating.. level 66, on my 5th high level alt, going to hit 70 (more likely 68) and move to northrend, won't even see a flyer til 76. bad design tbh, the flight in outlands should have had it's restrictions lessenned the day lich king was released.

Lowering the first mount to level 20 is nice, I must have jogged around The Barrens and surrounding zones a million times!! :(
I still havent found anything clear on the 'faction discounts now apply' bit. Whether this is for the skill up and the mount costs, or just for one...? or which factions would apply to what mounts...?
Something that did make me chuckle from the forums was that now low level players can have mounts there were calls to lower the level druids and shamans get travel and ghost wolf forms lol, Blizzard hands out a little biscuit and the player base jumps right after the whole packet lol.

And similarly the shouts of "OMG THIS SHOULD HAVE HAPPENED SOONER".

The faction discounts will, I expect, apply to both the mounts and the skills required, so there will be a possible 20% discount on those. 1k off epic flyer = YES PLEASE.

Might actually get around to getting exalted with orgrimmar now... even though I already have the skills :D

The point for this happening now is so that people experiencing the old content have a slightly easier time, don't forget it's now older content, but the new content is experienced the way it is supposed to be....

The epicness of Howling Fjord would not be the same if you could fly straight away.

I've got to 80 twice. Who exactly is the zone "new" to?

This is why I asked which factions we should be farming. Cos last time I checked, I wasn't buying my flying skills off any major capital faction. Only the first two riding skills are linked to your capital faction iirc?

The last two were shadowmoon valley, some random orc to train anyone of any faction, same for cold weather upgrade.. one random npc of who knows what faction.. and now they are moving flight trainers to the starter zones in Northrend, so it'll be a random NPC again.. which faction? Honor hold I expect!

Edit: And you're an ORC! How can you have played so long and NOT be exalted? You do know you get full rep rewards for grey quests right?
Edit2: Why bother if you already have the skills? o.o;

When I levelled up the rep rewards for your home faction were MUCH lower than they are now, and until the argent tournament came along the only real way to get any more rep with your home faction if you had already done all of those quests was to grind a metric fuckton of runecloth or play AV nonstop for half a year....

I became an Ambassador long before Argent Tournament (in fact, I still haven't seen it, is it good? Worth doing?) ;)

It wasn't that hard tbh! Reached halfway through revered on each faction if not more just by tracking down all the faction quests on wowhead. Rest was runecloth, and you can get 4 bags full in an hour anyways.

p.s. No comment on the faction thing? I really don't think it's capitol rep we will need. Though I would hope for it to be that.

The faction for the lower flying skill will, I expect, be Thrallmar rep.

Obviously not confirmed but its possible that a new NPC could appear next to the epic land mount ones in each faction's home area, so the faction discount will be for your own faction.

I think.

Or hope.

One of the two :D

I'm guessing the faction discounts will be Horde rep ones, or so I would hope.

Would make things -immeasurably- better for levelling. I've got 4 80s, two over 70, and another in the 60s, with more on the way up, and each time the Barrens has sucked without a ground mount, the 45-60 stretch has sucked without an epic mount, and some parts of Outland sucked without a flyer, at least from a smooth levelling perspective.

And the faction discounts on the epic flight skill... yes yes a thousand times YES!
