Netgear DG834 ADSL Modem -- any experience?

I bought my parents one - its about as re-inforced as a cereal box (sans cereal) and it falls over when it gets a bit hot and sweaty i.e. give it room to breath or expect more downtime (its passively cooled).

Other than that it does what it says on the tin and has a grandma friendly setup wizard and the usual flickery lights and options that you would expect.

Not my kind of kit at all. I'll stick with my Zyxel for now.

I have this product, or at least a slightly older model, i purchased it about a year and half ago, and its still working fine, had a few teething problems with it at first, but just had to fiddle with the setings a bit, tis a decent bit of kit, has no problem with BF2 which is nice :D
You just need to remember to open the correct ports or it'll block everything this side of sunday
also, if you're sharing a connection through it, and someone else starts to use the internet when your playing online, you're basically screwed as (as far as i can tell) theres no way to give priority to certain types of transfer.

oh and its not too expensive, and works perfectly ok with xbox live (if you care that is)

Hope this helps

Hey, I've got a Zyxel too :).

It's become a bit odd though. To connect to the internet I have to lift up the house phone until the little system tray icon turns green .

Prestige 643

Name: Zyxel
Routing: IP
ZyNOS F/W Version: V2.50(AP.3) | 11/6/2001
ADSL Chipset Vendor: Alcatel, Version 3.8.124
Standard: Multi-Mode

I've been using this router for around 5 years now and I've had 1 crash that I know about (I foolishly nearly melted the poor beastie by putting it next to a radiator). Other than that its been solidly stable although due to its age I doubt I'll see much luck with ADSL2+. According to the documentation it will happily support 8MB down 1MB up. Ironically it uses an Alcatel chipset and we all know how nice the good old "Frog" USB modems were that were also made by alcatel. Fortunately this chipset has proven its worth :)

FYI, if I was buying right now I'd look at the newer zyxel models or I'd have a look at the DrayTech kit which is supposed to be very very nice. Or if I was feeling particularly flush ...

I've got the Prestige 630.

But apparently they don't make it anymore, they've only got the 630-C1.

The link to the product specs for the 630 doesn't work .

Haven's post is much for informative, I'm just telling you mine for completness ;).

I had a DG834G, and had none of the problems Haven mentioned. It worked just fine. It did however get a bit hot, but that didn't stop it from working. Zero downtime, zero problems

Thank you for the feedback everyone!

I'll take a peer at the Zyxel but if it turns out to be significantly more money for few additional features then I'll probably go with the Netgear. It'll be remote from the rest of my hardware so it'll have the chance to be cool. :)
