[Tech] New PC Time.

T-Bone

In Cryo Sleep
It's that time again where I probe the collective brain of The Haven Net tech wizards to assist me with the procuring of a new rig. I've got what I believe to be the system I want (Minus a sound card which I really know nothing about) so if anyone sees anything I've missed, can recommend other pieces or just has some general comments to make feel free. :)

Here's what I'm getting...

So, there you have it, thanks in advance for any responses.

I would suggest that you post up a budget - that way if people dont like what you have on here then they know the kind of price range to suggest something in :)

I'll take a more detailed look myself when I get home from work...

An 800W power supply is way too much for that rig. Also you are much better off getting a good quality PSU at around I reckon 500W for that lot than getting a cheap 800W one as it is much more likely to die on you and that is always an ass.
The major issue with that case is the lack of decent dust filters. It will get dusty pretty quickly which is an ass and will need a bit of a dusting more regularly than you might like. As far as soundcards go, unless you really want one and in which case I'd say still go for a creative x-fi onboard sound is pretty good these days.

The 8 series are now serious old now as well, you can get a for a similar price a 9800 or a 9600 that would wipe the floor with the 8800GT, There's also the ATi 3870s and the 4870s that are much better cards at not a great increase in price and in some cases none at all.

I'd also look at getting a x38 board rather than the p35. Yes the p35s were awesome, however they are now really getting on a bit.

Sorry if this is seen as raining all over your parade tis not meant to be just don't want to see you get less for your money than you might be able to with a bit of tweaking.

I'm assuming a budget of £560 ish from what you have put there.
I'll have look.

To the bobmobile.

Interesting there Bob, well my budget is actually £750, that just seemed like nice-ness for the money, but I shall look forward to hearing what you suggest.

personally i'd say go for the OCZ 600W, the Samsung DVD-RW and the Q6600 with a nice HSF though bob is probably best to advise on that one

also i have never used the Zotac cards so i don't know what the reliability\performance is like, though you may want to consider the HD 4850 which performs almost as well as the 9800 GTX but for about £120

i would presume that he will either stick with the XP pro he had last i was there or get something shiny from MSAA

As far as soundcards go, I wouldn't bother unless you're also planning on getting a nice set of speakers (I quite like the logitech 5.1 sets.) That being said, many onboard cards these days also have 5.1 support built right in, but I've found it simply doesn't compare to a dedicated card.

Rightio, I've done what I always do of going for as close to the price as possible. There's a few things you can change to make it cheaper or different if you prefer Nvidia or whatever but it gives you some idea of what you can get for the money.

I was surprised but pleased to see that you can now get 1TB drives cheaper per GB than 750s. If you prefer Nvidia then you can get a 9series at pretty good value. Since doing this I'd also probably suggest the 4870 rather than the 3870 X2 you can get them for as little as £170 now which makes them better bang for buck than the 3870 X2, I just cba to redo my pic. So just pretend there's on of them in there instead:p.

If you also really like the Antec 900 case then that is also a way of saving some money, I just personally much prefer the p182 myself.

Anything along those lines would set you up very nicely.
