New THN Hub released

It's taken me a bit and this really is just the first cut but the new THN Hub is now available.

You'll see there's some basic forum integration already in place and a first pass on various links and, of course, Tetsuo's very fine banner.

I'd not say that this was everything I want from this page but it's certainly good enough to call version 1.0.

Feedback appreciated, as always.

I must say that is looking very fine indeed. Awesome work there Ronin :)

Just wondering how the games forum posts get integrated into the hub? Is it automatic from the [News] tag?

It is automatic from that tag. However, only Admins, Junior Admins and Super Mods can currently post news and it must be posted in Hey Admins (actually, it's a named list just now). I might relax any/all of those restrictions over time but I wanted a quick solution.

Brilliant Job! The only thing i think would look cooler is maybe less white and a background with a gradient? I'm a fan of darker pages for some reason, just not a fan of white lol!

Also, who edits or adds news?

Is this a different question to the answer I've already given?

To extend that, threads in Hey Admins with the prefix [News] that are made by an authorised person will automatically show up on the front page. Edits to those posts will thereby automatically be reflected on the front page. There may be a short lag due to caching of the RSS feed but largely unnoticeable I imagine.

Really nice, well done Ronin. I'd prob be with Colrob about the white-ness though. It strains the eyes :).

Re: [News] New THN Hub released

I'm running a development copy of the site in parallel to the main one just to try out some new things without break the hub for normal visitors. That's available at http://www.thehavennet.org.uk/dev/ ...

Made some changes to that version.

  • Added a "watermark" THN tree to the bottom right of the content panel.
  • Fixed errant closing </p> tag in the footer.
  • Altered main title and news titles to use a similar style to the side bar headers.
  • Added some more space between the footer and the content.

Any better?

I agree the contrast is a little high at the moment but it's not going to be a dark site. I'll mitigate the glare over time but I don't plan to switch out to a dark view.

In fact, just a quick addition to the above:

  • Switched over to the authenticated RSS feed as if a guest visited that feed. Making some tweaks to the feed to be more compatible but this gives me cool things like comment counts and links.

Yep, I did. And now the comment links actually do what I wanted.

Hey ronin,

Another fantastic piece of work you have done for us, well done you!

Anyway, as for feedback, I think the Dev version with the black headers looks much better, If makes the consistancy of the page appear better. I dont have a problem with glare, I think it looks fine, in my opinion there are far too many "dark" sites cropping up on the net which dont always look right!

Yeah, I'm coming to the same conclusion. I'm away Monday and Tuesday with work but if I'm still happy with that on Tuesday evening or Wednesday then I'll replace the live version with the development copy.

Thanks for the feedback. :)

Re: [News] New THN Hub released

I've updated the hub with the dev version.

That I'll call quits for the first release. More functionality later, of course; requests to Hey Admins, as always. :)
