No Spam Tag

So, I have recently been caught by the minimum post length several times. I am assuming this is something todo with spam / bot protection.

Is it possible to have some forms of tag which counts to post length (such as
) but actually has no render code. The idea being i could go

[nospam]THNISGREAT[/nospam] and not need any post content

The THNISGREAT was kinda as a passcode idea required to ensure the nospam is valid...

Surely it's easier to think of 4 characters of meaningfulness regarding the link youve just posted, even if its just "Vibs."?

Compared to having to think "hm... right, what was that nospam thing. er.... [spam]thnisshit[/spam] "... nope thats not it .*edit* 'thnisawesome' .... nope not it either....

:p

I'm really pretty reluctant to open to posts of less than 5 characters, which is the current minimum. It's not really anything to do with bots, who generally post giant posts full of links, but much more to do with having posts that are in any way meaningful.

Quotes don't count to character count, so you need to add at least 5 characters of something of your own. What it does is discourage "me too" posts, except that "me too" would pass the 5 character filter... so it discourages single smilie posts or whatever.

What is it that you're posting that means that you hit minimum character limits so regularly?

Sounds like what you're actually after is a "like" button. Much like there is on faceache et al.

There may be a mod for such a thing. Of course in all fairness I'd also like a "dislike" option if we went this route but that would probably only encourage the flame trolls :P

The Multiplay Forums have such an option

We already had a system where you could dislike people's posts, and as I recall all it did was cause people to bitch until the mods reversed any negative hits... :p

Yep, that's pretty much what happened.

It was replaced with cookies. Is this a request for cookies to be more visible?

Perfectly visible if you ask me. Maybe if they can be set to show a specific number if user sets them to, otherwise keep the vague level description as is?
I think ultimately what the OP seeks isn't what these forums are about.
The old adage of "if you don't have something positive to say, don't say anything at all" comes to mind.

Is it possible to have like without dislike, as on mpuk?

But we already do... in the form of cookies. I don't really see the need for people to just thumb through the forums and put a tick on everything they approve of. If you approve of something then take the time to write about it, cause without text a forum is nothing and we devolve to a facebook level of pokes, likes and status-whores.

((N.B. Even if i could have just put a dislike or thumbs down on this, i would have still typed it out.))

I think more visible cookies is what they're after Ronin.

i.e. like the like on MPUK, it shows us who's cookied a post? rather than having to go and check your usercp to find out if you've been handed any :)

Edit:

Oh Vibs is asking for it because of this:

http://games.thehavennet.org.uk/showpost.php?p=121000&postcount=4

I believe this counts for any post that's just an image as well? i.e. the NAME THAT <tat> line of threads ;)

I think that tags are ignored for post length checks, though I could be wrong.

Yeah, in general, I'm not seeing a strong case for a change of this sort here. That said, I also don't use any of the Like (or Dislike) features in most other places, with the exception of YouTube where it somewhat effects what it throws up as recommendations for me, and thus has some impact on my experience of the site.

Not closing the discussion, mind you, just not convinced that either post lengths should be allowed to be shorter, or that THN needs a Like function instead or as well as cookies.

Ah in that case then, it's only if you quote something does it not count as text.

How about being able to see cookie'd posts as mentioned earlier up the thread. Does that tick a box or do we want cookies to be anonymous ?

There's two levels to that, I think:

  1. A post shows how many cookies it got.
  2. A post shows who gave it cookies.

They're both based off the same information, ultimately, but including that information into posts may be more tricky...

I don't see a problem with either of these TBH, though Tillbrook and my cookie boosting scheme will be exposed for all the world to see...
