Oblivion performance degradation

Hi

I was pleasantly surprised with the graphics quality that I could get out of Oblivion with my X800GTO and was happily playing with most of the settings pumped up quite high and still a decent framerate. Sometimes, however, when I'd leave a city or enter the arena the framerate would just DIE. I mean something in the order of moving from an average of 50fps down to a max of about 4 or 5fps. It seems that reinstalling the game, reinstalling windows and changing the settings in game has no effect on this. Even with a fresh install and everything on low it works fine for a while and then the FPS just drops through the floor. In any case, quitting and restarting the game seems to remedy the problem.

Has anyone else had this or does anyone know what the cause might be?

I have heard that a big problem with Oblivion is the rendering of the grass. If you set it to 0 it should reduce your problems. (Would make sense with going out of the city being a problem too.)

The loading or switching music can cause problems as well. Setting the volume to 0 doesn't actually turn it off, so you need to edit the ini file to actually diable it.

I've been having a similar problem with the game, except that it just crashes Something that I've found reduces the amount of crashing it to quicksave often.
