[Tech] Obscure sound problem

Helloes, :)

Ok, so, I have this issue:

I play WoW.

No, that's not it.

There's this Ulduar raid thing, where we have these encounters. Whenever we start either the Razorscale, Ignis or Deconstructor encounter, my sound board starts emitting furious doses of loud static. It doesn't shut up until I leave the instance or teleport into the Antechamber of Ulduar.

I've learned to live with it, but it does give me a bit of a headache.

The sound card works flawlessly in every other part of WoW or with any other game that I've played.

This is confusing the hell out of me...

Thoughts?

Cheers,
J.

Make sure you've in-game voice chat disabled. Disable TS and Skype and any music you have playing through other apps and see if it goes away. If it does then its likely a software conflict or the maxing out of your sound channels or IRQ interupts (don't worry what these mean if they don't make sense).

Are you using vista zooggy? I have similar crackling issues with Wow in certain places. Ulduar isnt one of them for me but I get it outside in the storm peaks and I get it BADLY in Icecrown and Zul Drak. I looked up lots of places and all blizzard do is ask for a dxdiag and never reply to it. I've given up. I did buy a nice new soundcard a while ago but haven't got around to putting it in, Im hoping that will help as other people said they had the problem with vista until they stopped using onboard sound

I am not, though I am using onboard sound...

There's no music apps running and I don't use Skype, but I'm not about to disable TS during a raid. :) Although, I did shut it down once and the problem did not go away.

I shall try the voice chat thing, though.

As for the sound channels and IRQs, I take it that your theory is that the game sound is somehow more complex during those encounters?

Anyway, thanks for your input. I shall report my results after next Friday...

Cheers,
J.

Ahey, :)

That might be it. Would those areas in the game be more CPU intensive by chance?

I suppose it's possible, but comparing with other encounters, I really don't see why...

I have also just verified that I already had voice chat disabled... :(

So, I unchecked all the sound options that say they "affect performance", and I'll see if it makes any difference...

Cheers,
J.

There is an option in-game for the number of sound channels available, that I believe is togglable between one of two settings.

Try the other setting.
