So work got me a macbook and its the first mac product I've ever used. I'm looking for suggestions on apps that you use and find useful as currently I'm a level 1 OSX noob.

I'll take any suggestions and add them to a page on the wiki for all to benefit from.

Thanks in advance.

Just install linux on it. it'll make you happier. :p

Definitely going to happen. Got to wait for things like thunderbolt hot-plug support to make it to the mainline kernel before it'll be smooth ride though. I guestimate should have linux on it by Easter hopefully.

Having run OSX for some time (amongst others) there are some bits that wouldn't go amiss, depending on what you want. The ports are a good start, but could also look into things like Adium for a libpurple chat client, Xchat Aqua isn't too bad either.

You can also use the cross-platform applications, so VLC, LibreOffice, Mozilla stuff, Chromium etc. Also have a butchers at the webkit nightly buids. Also this blog post has some interesting bits and bobs.

It's been a while since I used OSX at all, so a pinch of salt with this.

Cheatsheet is useful and free from the App store. Is a handy way to find OSX shortcuts within almost every common other App.

Finder>Prefs>General tick boxes for HDD,servers, other stuff that be set to when mounted have icons on the desktop (is now defaulted to be off but I like to have them on the desktop).

ctrl+alt+cmd Eject is a handy shutdown shortcut. (some combo of ctrl/alt/cmd and eject is also sleep and restart)

Cmd+Space is Spotlight. Spotlight is where I do everything , indexed search that is fairly awesome.

Will try and remember when at work to ask people about what apps they use, never actually use these Macmajobs.
