Overly cautious

Well now, the title of this topic is a COMPLETE understatement. However, this would make me laugh or cry, so I laughed. I would cry to think that the world has become such a place where advertising has people yelling terrorism. So, instead, I'm laughing at how dense some people can be. Please, leave me to laugh, and don't make me cry...

I think you're being a little unfair on the authorities here. It was definitely a bit out of proportion to charge the two guys with placing hoax devices and disorderly conduct when, after a small investigation, it was concluded that the devices were not harmful.

What is a little unfair is the way that the security forces have been portrayed (as 'blithering, twitchy idiots' in this case) when, I'd say, they were perfectly correct to take at least some amount of precaution when approaching the situation. There really aren't very many reasons why you should be placing an electronic device with batteries on key structures, especially when they all say 'fuck you'.
Let's assume for a second that the devices were bombs and security forces decided that they were harmless 'advertisement' devices and decided not to take it any further, I dread to think of the gigantic uproar that would have resulted. 'Security forces neglect to inspect electronic devices on bridge - 20 dead' 'Incompetent security forces fail to investiate suspicious devices' etc. In that respect, I would be more appalled if they had failed to act on the situation. In fact, if it was a bomb and they were exposed for failing to investigate, any money one of you would post 'Dumbass American security ignore blatant bombs on walls' Any money.

What really makes this whole debacle frightening imo, is that is makes it abundantly clear that the people are frightened. Frightened people does not good make good decisions. With the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist, it's a bit like the "bomb-on-the-plane" scare. I mean, come on, shampoo?

The "devices" were up for three weeks before authorities took action. I would think most bombs have substantially shorter fuses, no? If we want to play the "what if they were real bombs, though?" game, it seems they lost there as well.

Besides, the only place you're going to see a bomb with batteries, wires everywhere and flashing lights is in the movies. In real life, bombs look like cars (copy and paste that address, the site blocks direct file links,) or garbage cans, or tennis balls.

It turns out that there was a bomb scare at a hospital in Boston that same day which, given, would make the authorities that much twitchier. Sadly, that event proves just how backwards their priorities are:
In the hospital incident, investigators believe a former hospital employee planted the phony bomb in an office at 185 Harrison Ave. He has been identified but has not been charged, the sources said.

So let's get this straight: two guys who placed some glorified LED throwies spent a night in jail and are facing some rather serious charges, but the disgruntled employee who planted a fake pipe bomb in a hospital won't be charged? Fucking brilliant, that.

Constructive criticism!
An appropriate response would've been this:
In New York, a street was shut down for 45 minutes after two of the devices were found on an overpass, the New York Post reported.

Caution is warranted, check things out, do what you need to do, but keep your head. Panic is not the same as caution, and will only make things hundreds of times worse. Cooler heads prevailed in New York. In Boston, on the other hand, I have a hard time believing anyone in power used their head at all.
