Problem

I just downloaded the latest NS and Steam won't pick it up, even after reboot. It's installed in sourceapps/ns which was the default directory, but it doesn't want to work.

Welcome, nice to see you in here.

Natural Selection is a mod for the original Half-Life 1, not source.

Mine is installed in: C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\<my_steam@account>\half-life\ns

Yeah, to my humiliation i found that out a few hours after i asked, I have half-life in all but its not the steam one, its a copy of the original before steam was made, how do i install it into steam without shelling out cash to get another copy of it from steam?

When i got Steam, i could install half-life and it would ask me for my CD-Key, i entered it, and it gave me the rights for Halflife, Opforce, and blueshift. Even though i had only bought Half-Life. :)

You got to "games" -> "Activate a product in Steam" e.g.

steam.jpg

And you will be asked to enter your CD key etc. Just follow the instructions :).

The mod/game gunman chronicles gives you those 3 too, and its only ?2 from play.com :P (well, it was for over 3 months.).

I think it downloads HL onto your compy, so it should end up in the steam folder.

I think I actually have two installs of HL on my compy at home... I should check on that...

Well... I don't have the post Steam copy of HL, so I can't use the CD key from it on steam,

Go into steam, go to games I already own, enter your HL CD key, it will download a copy into steam for you, sorted.

When I had the old copy of Half-Life on my pc, steam dragged most of the game from there over to it's own directory so that I didn't have to download the whole game again. So long as you have the cd key then you're sorted.

Just use the CD key that came with your copy of HL. Mine was pre-steam and it worked just fine.

A word of caution here: some owners of the original Sierra version of HL may actually not be able to register with steam because in the early days Sierra ended up dispatching duplicate keys. There's no way round the issue other than to buy a new copy from steam or a new retail version (like the Generations pack). Valve insist the issue is Sierra's fault for duplicating CD keys and Sierra insist that since the game works if you run it via the retail CD that they've supplied you a 'working copy' and so don't have to do anything further.

Not experience, luckily, but I have heard tales of this happening (and valve's word on it via the Steam Support system).

This is maybe going slightly off topic to the problem but I got a duplicate CD key and phoned up some technical support line, and they told me to email the tech support. I did so and gave them my cd key and the serial number of the copy I got along with certain information from where I got it.

They didn't seem to mind and sent me a new CD-key :D.
