two things. Don't be surprised if Sony pull off the usual dollar for pound conversion that seems to go on when things like this come out... it's happened before and can happen again. I know that sounds negative but don't be too surprised if it happens. Why do you think that the European/UK price has not been announced???

taken from this article, the price in Europe is set at 499 Euros for the one with a 20GB drive, and 599 Euros for the one with a 60GB drive.

HOW they can manage to charge an extra 100 Euros for just an extra 40 fucking GB i don't know... but don't be surprised if those prices are inflated somewhat when they are sold here.

However... if I remember correctly, the PS3 will be region-free so you could easily buy a US or Japanese one and bring it over to the UK with no problems, i guess....

No, if you read it properly, i.e. the title

Gamespot said:
E3 06: PS3 launches Nov. 17--$499 for 20GB, $599 for 60GB

then thats the price in Dollars not Euros :S so 100 extra dollars, is only an extra 53GBP or 78euros so similar to the price jump in the 360

Read the last paragraph of the Gamespot article I linked to above:
Gamespot said:
Hirai takes the stage once again and recaps what's been seen so far. Then he announces the global launch details. It will be available in two versions: One with a 60GB hard drive, and one with 20GB. It will launch in the US on November 17 for $499 ($549 CDN) for the 20GB version and $599 ($659 CDN) for the 60GB one. The machine will launch in Japan on November 11 with the 20GB version fetching 59,800 yen, and the 60GB one bearing an "open price," which means retailers will set the price themselves. Europe and Australia will also get the machine on November 17, with the 20GB version running for 499 euros, and the 60GB configuration going for 599 euros. Hirai thanked the audience and invited them to get their hands on PS3 games at kiosks throughout the hall.

I suggest you take your own advice and read it properly!!! :p

every console I can remember has always had the dollar for pound conversion happen on initial release, and even afterwards its the same. The problem is that Europe and especially the UK has alot more taxes on goods than in the US, so the price is lower over there as it doesn't include as much tax in the actual price.

In this case, it should see the UK prices of the PS3 set at (what I would guess) to be GBP350 for the lower spec one, and around GBP400 for the higher spec one...

In further news, after the Nintendo conference at E3, Sony announce that their conference was in fact fake and at the real conference they announce the name of the console as the "Playstation Thwii".

Seriously, Sony's pre-E3 conference couldn't have been much more of a shambles if they tried.

i heard it was gonna b ?600 :p i guess my sources are wrong again hehehe ;)

the 600 you heard would be the price for the higher spec system in Euros, not GBP. However if Sony decide to try and shaft us in the UK (as I haven't yet seen an official announcement regarding the UK price in GBP, rather than just a "European" price - and shops won't go for the EXACT Euro conversion as per usual) about the price I think I will not be buying one at ANY time, let alone later on when the price decreases. No matter how much I love the final fantasy series...

BTW the exact conversions of the two prices in Euros are as follows:

499 Euros = 342.92GBP (lower spec system - expect this one to retail at about 350GBP)
599 Euros = 410.94GBP (higher spec system - not sure whether this will get rounded up or down tbh, but knowing most retailers this will probably go up.)

Conversions correct at time of going to press :D

Hmm, I'd never buy a console anyway....

But, when I first heard of this in the guardian this morning, I thought by "memory" Sony meant RAM, so I guess we should be happy the limitations on storage (which isn't such a necessity anyway!)

Hmm, an 80GB 2.5" harddisk can be had for as little as 75 euro here, then again Sony will probably have some tricks up its sleeve to prevent it from being compatible with off the shelf PC harddrives.

Anyway, like Fi$hy, i'm not very keen on consoles. Give me a 1600x1200 screen, mouse and keyboard any day. The only plus consoles have is that you can play in your living room with friends, not worth that kind of money, ihmo.

Interesting, Pest. I think myself more a console man rather than a PC man myself, and Id consider a couple of hundred quid a decent price for a console that can play games at a stable framerate, requires no installation, graphics equal to or surpassing that of a decent PC, an easier to handle joypad (well, for most games) and easier for mates-round-at-your house kind of multiplayer (as well as online multiplayer these days, Xbox Live is the thing which endears me to my 360 the most).
Also, 1600x1200 screens arent in the too distant future; and you can buy a mouse and keyboard for your console if you prefer it that way.
I guess it just depends on what you were brought up on.

I much preffer a PC to a consol. First of all with a PC you can do lots more than play games, There are endless amounts of things that can be done on a PC that cannot be done on a Console. I know that there talking about integrating more applications etc. into consoles but PC's always will have the advantage over consoles when it comes to this sort of thing.

The second thing that is good with a computer is When you are playing games, you can find lots of different mod for them, For example I've been waiting on a Jedi Academy Mod comming out. The simple fact is not many people know how, or will actually make a mod for the X-box or Ps#. Not only will they have to find the correct code but then there is the idea of marketing it etc. There is also the issue about Patches and Bug fixes...

You make the point that the joypad is easier to handle on a console, but you can just as easily get a similar joypad for a PC, just as you can get a mouse and keyboard for a console.

The graphics thing I don't know much about, but I would like to think that PC's have and always will have better Graphics than consoles, although as the technology's advance it becomes much more expensive.

I'll admit that having friends round playing the consoles with you is good fun, However I would not say that it is easier to play a console game online.

If you gave me the choice between a ?600 console and a ?600 PC, I'm afraid that the Pc would always win :).

I had a big reply written out for this, but forget that :) Ill plump it out in simple terms.

My first experience with games was with consoles, my finest ever experience with games was with consoles. Why would I change? Im not issuing a challenge here or anything, since you arent trying to wean me off consoles in the first place :) I just want to point out that Im a born and bred console man. I doubt anything could change my ways and Im sure you're the same with PCs.
Incidentally, im rather annoyed with the way consoles are perceived in the market nowadays. I rather liked it more when video gaming was an 'underground' type of thing, rather than having it plastered all over the place. Nothing incenses me more than seeing an advert for a videogame on TV. Ill explain this later on.

Further to this Macca, on what type of system did you have your first experience and best experience with games?

It's all about preference, of course someone who was born into consoles will have that as their preference. It's just natural :) I never had a sega or a PS1 or an N64. The only console I've ever had is an xbox, and I hardly played that. Only used it to play Halo and Halo 2 on...

I grew up using PCs, and they are my preference. Although my arguement for PCs against consoles is a lot of the same as to what Macca argued, but also that consoles are just a build of components that you would find in a PC. They are just all of the same with a locked up casing with a company logo on the front. They are not inteded to be upgradable...as there would be no competition for future consoles. They would just be PCs in that case.
