Not quite sure I agree with all this dismissal of consoles off the bat. I've been using both consoles and PCs for quite a while now and I have to say that if you have the money, they're a great idea.
Not going to go on about all the space saving stuff that usually gets thrown about, the Xbox is huge anyway...but the games on them are worth the price of admission. Now, not every single game that gets released is going to be a stellar AAA title, I agree, but it's that way for PC games too, no matter the ability to tweak and configure. In fact, the major difference with console games is that at the moment, and for the vast majority of titles, the games themselves are ready to play without the need for excessive patching (EA and Ubisoft are masters at this, both the culprits of releasing patches on the day of release of a few PC titles). Perhaps what is best about this 'readiness' is that you can either dip into your favourite console game for an hour or two without spending your day on it, or just go for it full-scale, not that you can't do this on a PC of course, but it seems to me that console games in general are created exactly for this purpose (don't think I need to mention PC games like CoH which take around 8 hours in one sitting for the complex parts).
I can name quite a few great games for consoles that i've never seen ported to the PC, Ninja Gaiden for example (if you like ninjas) and in my eyes, wouldn't quite work properly on the PC due to the keyboard and mouse combo being generally rubbish for adventure gaming - case in hand, other fighting games and the new PoP games. Yeah, everyone knows that you can buy a gamepad for a PC, but with a console, it's standard, it's there and it works.
Basically, although you can get the majority of games for the PC that also get published on consoles, there are quite a lot of hidden gems that you'll never find if you stick to just one platform, such as the upcoming MGS4 for PS3 and quite a few other console specific titles. As for whether the Xbox 360 or PS3 will be worth any interest, it depends wholly on if the games themselves warrant such attention, although I am a touch sceptical about the March 2006 release for PS3, more likely to be november by the time it reaches European shores - smaller market, you see.
