Puzzle Post IV

Take a wee peaksie below...

Looked? Good. "Er, four doesn't equal two...", quite right! But why doesn't the equation make sense? Where is the mathematical naughty?

Rep for the heroes who figure it out :D.

(Don't feel bad if you can't see it straight off, I had to be reminded that a=b to get it :))

a = b
( x 2a)
2a[sup]2[/sup] = 2ab
( + 2a[sup]2[/sup])
4a[sup]2[/sup] = 2a[sup]2[/sup] + 2ab
( - 4ab)
4a[sup]2[/sup] – 4ab = 2a[sup]2[/sup] – 2ab

4(a[sup]2[/sup] – ab) = 2(a[sup]2[/sup] – ab)

4 = 2
Voila!

if both a and b are equal to 1, I think that would work out (apart from that 4=2 at the bottom, of course)

4(1^2 - 1x1) = 2(1^2 - 1x1) ----->

4(1 - 1) = 2(1 - 1) ---->

4 - 4 = 2 - 2 ----->

0 = 0 :D

Is this right, or am I not reading the question correctly and solving a whole different thing to what I'm supposed to be solving? :p

I wonder if it can be this simple?

4(a[sup]2[/sup] – ab) = 2(a[sup]2[/sup] – ab)

(because a = b)

4(a[sup]2[/sup] – a[sup]2[/sup]) = 2(a[sup]2[/sup] – a[sup]2[/sup])

4 x 0 = 2 x 0

0 = 0

Wooo! Bob got it :)

Silly Tetsuo and Ronin only proved that 4(a[sup]2[/sup] - ab) = 2(a[sup]2[/sup] - ab), you need to say why 4 doesn't equal 2! :D

Yeah, I read it, and thought that it was a
divide by zero
but bob, Tets and Ronin got there before me! And don't be mean Pia, they implied the reason :p

Edit - And then bob complains that they didn't imply it, but still! They were getting there :p

Bah, I claim victory for Tetsuo. :D

(Though I admit that I just wrote maths, didn't say what the problem was.)

Too kind, too kind :D Maybe you should be my lawyer? Together, we can take on the judicial system! Well, maybe not, but we could try to make sense of Pia's broken logic.

Oh, hey look! I just noticed that Pia made an algebraic Christmas tree! :D

Using the same method, I can proove that five equals seven ...
but as there is no defenition for dividing by zero its not correct!
