Random internet disconnects

Sometimes when I'm surfing the 'net, I'll get an error message saying something along the lines of "Windows Generic.. System 32.. has crashed", when this happens, my internet disconnects, and when I double-click speedtouch connection it reconnects but my internet isn't connected as I can't view sites.

I'll get more information when the time comes when it disconnects. :)

Oh, and REP! For anyone who helps!

This happens to me occasionally, where it disconnects however the speedtouch modem Icon is still green. All I do Is take the Usb out and put it back in and it works for me, not the best soloution but it doesn't happen often enough to become a nuissance so :).

This happens to me on BT as well, random disconnections all of the time, it's a bloody bugger if you're downloading a large file from a server that doesn't support download pausing/resuming.

well I phoned BT today and it just so happened that the problem started while I was on the phone to him so he did a line test and said that apparently the line wasn't being filtered properly, so he said to try a new microfilter. well it just happened again...

Aye, they first blamed me for installing it wrong, they took me through a step by step installation, it still was buggering around.
Next they blamed my microfilters, I changed them to the standard (less effective) BT supplied ones, it still buggered around aswell as being slower.
Now they were questioning my linebox, it wasn't BT certified, but it was a more stable linebox than the original, they refitted a standard BT linebox, and again, the problem persisted and also the connection was slighty slower.
Now, they blame me for the ammount if bandwidth I use daily, erm... Hello, BT UNLIMITED broadband??

Yeah, appart from ALL of that crap, they're pretty good...

If you can get a screenie or exact text of the error message then there's much more we can do to help.

I find it a little suspicious, though, that you're all having issues with BT Yahoo and your SpeedTouch DSL Modems (presumably the USB one...?).

I use Freedom2Surf and a Westell DSL Modem to do my dialing, which then does pass-thru control of the DSL to my Linksys WRT-54GS Router. I get no random disconnects, and my rates for downloading are just fine.

The program that is crashing is the one that is controlling your internet connection (surprise, surprise!). Could be a nice software conflict, in which case, uninstall and reinstall your speedtouch software and/or modem. If anything, buy yourself a decent router and use that to connect to the internet, then connect your PC (and others if you have them) to that. This will also mean that it will happily log anything that happens (if you get a decent one) and can call BT about it.

If it is to do with your connection (instead of your software), then do you have a static IP? If not, your ISP has the right (if you read the fine print) to disconnect you at any point while you are using the internet in order to free up an IP for someone else. Or to just annoy you, depends on how they are feeling. If they are disconnecting you and reassigning you an IP every time, it could cause Windows to get confused, and the application to crash. Reinstall should fix the crashing, but your line will still drop every now and then. Best bet would be to see if you can buy a static IP from them (I get a static IP from Bulldog at £5 extra/month).

Other then that, if your modem/router getting too hot? Is someone in your family pulling out wires every now and then? Anything else?
