Real ID - For Real?

Hoy, :)

I just got an email from Blizzard (presumably legitimate, judging from the address), talking about this new-fangled thing called Real ID.

It's mostly irrelevant for me, except for a small tidbit: cross-realm and cross-faction chat...

Seems... broken, in some fashion...

Thoughts?

Cheers,
J.

It's a Battle.net chat, you can talk to "freinds" other realms, other factions, other games.

If people you don't know get your name, i can see this being bad (Especially if someone you don't like gets it.)

Yeah, that's no biggie, as:

1) There's no one I don't like; and

2) You have to give a confirmation, anyway, sort of like Steam friends...

It's just that Blizzard has always been very heavily against cross-faction chat...

Cheers,
J.

Yeah. It's stupid isin't it. They are making this game for more of the casual players then the dedicated players who want to work. =/

It's chat with ANYONE on ANY Blizzard game.

Ok, so it might enable cross-faction chat, but this is ONLY with people who have confirmed that they are your friend, and vice-versa. i.e. only with people you would want to talk to anyway.

Maybe, but this is exactly the same as using xfire or the like to chat with someone. They aren't going to stop you from doing that, so they might as well give you a service that THEY run to use...

Why thought? Why further fragment the community. I don't see why the games community aren't putting their support behind existing services to really try and unify the gaming community.
For example, look at how popular steam is for exclusive releases and content nowadays compared to 5 years ago - companies know there is a massive community attached to Steam so it's great publicity.

yeah the real_ID\friend_ID is built into the SCII beta so i'm guessing it has been in testing there and is being implemented in other Blizz games now

friend id allows you to add people from the same game, real_id allows you to add any blizz account, however it does use the email you use for your account

Well I like it, having been on another server and also faction changing its nice to be able to talk to those people I missed again.
