Ah, thanks kirby. We couldn't manage to completely eradicate the norton scourge from our old PC (and thus it screwed it up when we tried to install a newer version). This guide could hold the key to eliminating the threat that is symantec.

Why is everyone so against Norton? It's fine for me, never had any problems and its always stopping viruses etc. from getting on the system.

They will be against it if it has caused them problems with their system. That's why these posts are here I believe.

well when i first got the new pc it had norton on the pc. and when very i tryed playing battlefield 2, downloading music or even trying to run programmes like punkbuster thing. norton did not want anything to do with it so they said nooooo :(

i even tryed all the firewall accese thing and there were all off so me dad said to get rid of it... which leaves me back the my first post

I've obviously had a bad experience with it. All it does for me is complicate things, slow the whole system down, asks you several million times 'Are you sure you want to unblock this program?', and clings on to your PC for dear life when you want to uninstall it.

When I open up the control panel and you get this readout:

"Norton System Works - it works!* With over 5 bajillion virus definitions and a foolproof system that asks you to check the validity of EVERY SINGLE BYTE OF DATA travelling down your broadband connection, there really isn't a more comprehensive anti-virus solution out there. Hell, why would you want to uninstall it? We don't believe you should, thats why we took the liberty of REMOVING YOUR UNINSTALL ICON - you're very much welcome.

Oh, by the way, a virus sneaked in whilst we weren't looking and we don't have a frigging clue how to get rid of it. Good luck, pal.

* Note: does not work

I must be one of the lucky ones. I've been using NIS 2003 for years now (probably about 3 ;) ), and the only times I see anything is when a program is trying to access the internet (and once I tell it to always allow the connection I never see it again), or when it detects a virus. Other than that it's never caused me any problems.

I beleive it's not on the uninstallation list for security reasons... Some virii uninstall the 'lesser' (AKA, free) AV programs by doing that.

I don't have norton. My antivirus software is called avast. It's brilliant and I got it for free for life!
