rendering fun

Thoughts / comments / suggestions / ideas

Am going to try and use something for a vague intro for the i42 videos I shall do (i will accept beatings if i dont) so am looking for constructive criticism.

(Yes I know that doesnt have audio. Is also missing another bit of text too)

I've also got a flamethrower effect too

So thoughts on the above? What do you like / not like? I've had mixed reactions about the abstract tree v. the real tree so far! I'm trying to create something that hasnt just been copied straight out of a tutorial so looking for original ideas :)

While I like the abstract tree, I think it's too abstract. I know it's a tree because I know it's about THN, but if I didn't know that then I might find that a little confusing.

However, I really like the humour in both the real and abstract tree versions. Somehow, the TF2 theme suits THN... ;)

On pure visual quality, however, I prefer the orange third option. Sure, it feels a little unfinished in comparison to the first two, but as an iSeries tie-in I feel it does a beautiful job.

Not sure what the flamethrower is for...? Also, took me a moment to figure out what the hissing sound was; thought it might be aggressive static.

Flamethrower was me playing around with particles and cos it looks funky :p Using the tf2 wav files from the content GCF :) Was more something that could be included in a design if appropriate(going to try and do another fancier lit one tomorrow)

I agree with what you mean regarding the whole i42 thing though. The first two are more "thn" things, whereas the second is definitely an "iseries only" sort of thing.

I've also just knocked up :

which is based on the artwork by shed (although annoyingly I've not got a nice vector based version of that otherwise it would look a whole lot nicer!)

Good job on all of them, really, but if you want another opinion...

I like the "proper" tree although not sure about the little pixel-pop towards the end nor the dropping letters.
If this is an Insomnia tie-in, how about... as the tree pulls back, create a horizon for it (the tree) to sit on then once "The Haven Net" is up, (above the horizon) float or fade in the I42 logo as used in the last example (4_a_reveal_test) below the horizon. This, then, ties it all up :)

Ends up a bit like this... (v rough)

The dropping letters at the end was me playing around with a procedural shatter effect thing. Wasnt 100% convinced myself on it. Was trying to think of something to do at the end rather than just stopping the video. In the end I'd like to have it tie in with the following bit of video really.

Do people prefer the THN blue sort of style, or the orange (homepage) style?

Orange. THN Blue is just vBulletin Blue with some layout modifications. Only reason it's persisted is because none of the Admins have had time/opportunity to make a different colour. In fact, I think the blue causes Haven to spit.

Yep, I like this version. Orange would clearly improve it, of course. :)

The blur-out at the end works well as a transition, for me.

Looks great. And now I watched it with sound on, yes it makes more sense :)

(And I like the blue/black, personally)

I'm sure there was one that had another transition out, a sort of camera pan/zoom thing but I can't see it on any of the videos in the thread.
I liked that one.

Sorry but 'til I see fizzy gloves I am not satisfied!

I think i need to get the sourceSDK out sometime so I can screen grab the fizzy gloves animation. Although its possible i can turn off the world rendering an donly enable the cl_drawhud in game to get that.... Will see what I can do!

@bacon: I think the first organic tree video in the original post had a fast pan at the end.

Was going to try and render a nicer high resolution version of one of the above shots / layouts for a banner for i42. What do people recommend? The end shot of the latest animated one? That one in orange?

Fairly sure you can open up the GDC's and get the game mdl/asset and decompile it out to something like OBJ and then open it in maya/max/blender. Should even include any animations.

You can indeed. I've not used blender before though so that would involve a bit of a learning curve for me. Also dont have 3dsmax or maya available either.

I'm having a look around some of the in engine source stuff at the moment which allows you to do vague machinima stuff. Will be my task for tonight!

Blender is probably definitely not where you wanna be when playing with source stuff, XSI Softimage probably is.
