[Resolved] FAQ search problem

Whenever I search the FAQs for a term that exists i.e. a result would be returned (like 'game' or 'rules') I get a database error, but if I search for a term that blatantly does not exist within the FAQs ('rubber-stamped chocoweasel') it just comes up that the search returned no results. I have come to the conclusion that there is a proverbial spanner in the proverbial works.

By the way, regular searching of the forums works fine, it's just the FAQs that are experiencing this problem it would seem.

Yep, you're unfortunately correct. We're missing our FAQ entry on "rubber-stamped chocoweasel". I'll get on that right away.

It's a problem with database collation. It's weird and complex. For the time being, keep FAQ searches to stuff that doesn't appear in the FAQ... or just save time and don't use the FAQ search function at all.

We know. To fix will take a lot of reading on mySQL table and database collations and what changing them on a live table means and whether it'll screw over the database and so on and so forth. No ETA on a fix. Later, probably. Much later, very likely.

Ah, I can rest easy now It's reassuring to know that THN gets its priorities straight!

If you must know, I was searching the FAQ for 'referral', which I have been puzzled about ever since they appeared in peoples profiles. What are they? Where do they come from? How come T-Bone has more than me? and, of course, Can I eat them?

I found them eventually, and whilst I was disappointed to discover that they are indigestable, they are important all the same

Functionally, they don't do anything. There's no rewards for referrals (currently). They're just an amusing "look see how many people I brought into THN" count. Maybe they might do something one day, but not yet.
