This game was a bit hard to write a review on as while it is in the FPS(First Person Shooter) genre, it is quite different from the rest.
What makes Unreal so different from the other First Person Shooters is the look and feel of the game and the surroundings there within. It has its own sense of style and game-play.

Everything is so unreal
You are a prisoner aboard a ship, being transported to a penal colony along with the other criminals. Suddenly the ship experiences difficulties and crashes on a mysterious planet and you must attempt to make your way out of the ship.

On this planet, a race called the Nali are being tortured and driven to do the biddings of another more technologically advanced race called the Skaarj.
As you make your way through the many environments, you must stand up against the Skaarj and at all costs, find a way to leave the planet alive.

The environment
The scenery is unique and breathtaking and the harmony between the medieval Naali and advanced sci-fi Skaarj technology in the game is stunning. You have a healthy mix between cramped and wide open spaces throughout the game.

Items
There is something about wielding weaponry and using items that appear to have been designed and used by an alien race.
The look and feel of each weapon you use is unique and with it’s own style. Plus, what better way to blast down the enemy than with their own weapons?

The game
Unreal presents a challenge and you learn to think on your feet as you encounter your foes.
Different enemies in the game can use their own specific type of power up to protect themselves, which was one of the things that caught my eye. This is both fun to watch and makes you think of ways to weaken them. A good way I found was if there was a pillar or such, to lure them to that and then run around it as they were trying to find you. This, however did not work with some enemies more than once as they learned from it.

Issues
If you want to play this game in MultiPlayer, you may find difficulties.
The developers stated in readme.txt that the game is still in the tweaking phase as far as internet play is concerned. Unreal however is highly tweakable and customizable and there are in-package DeathMatch levels. You even have a choice of various bots to play around with and can play single player death match games involving bots.

Unreal was made in 1998, but is still a great game to this day. It has proven itself well and has expanded into well-made sequals and a MultiPlayer series called Unreal Tournament.

The Demanding Gamer rates Unreal: 4.0/5

Added note
For those who demand MultiPlayer function, Unreal Tournament series provides loads of that.
