Shoutbox Pruning - 7 day archive only

Everyone,

The shoutbox is getting really pretty popular. Nothing wrong with that but to make sure it all keeps ticking over safely and efficiently I've set a pruning policy in place.

Each night, at 04:00 GMT, the shoutbox will prune itself. Any shouts that are older than seven (7) days will be permanently deleted. This should keep our shoutbox archive to under 500 shouts (very roughly), which should be enough history for anyone.

The first prune will happen tonight and will continue automatically.

Basically, the shoutbox is a place for "random splurge" (thanks Macca :) ). If you want a conversation that matters then make a thread in The Chat Box or somewhere more appropriate. If you just want to chat to someone in particular then I recommend instant messaging such as MSN. For other drivel, well shout away... ;)

I've manually run the prune to make sure it works and doesn't screw things up while I'm sleeping. It works.

It does have one key side-effect, which you're going to need to live with ('cause it's happened now and will continue to happen)...

When the shoutbox is pruned, the shoutbox stats are effectively pruned too, so the shoutbox counts represent what a user has posted in the last seven days. This means it'll be something of a rolling thing that will drift back and forth with time. That could be quite neat.

Either way, it tells me that T-Bone has really been using the shoutbox rather a lot in the past week. ;)
