The best route to succeed in this game (well, as far as I can tell) is:
The Swiss Way
1. Try to discover as many civilisations as possible, as quickly as possible. Make strong allies with everyone and trade evenly.
2. Don't succome to threats from other leaders. Use your other allies to swing an arguement in your favour.
3. Don't sign a defensive pact. If you play it properly, you shouldn't ever get invaded or be threatened with War. Of course, if you don't play it properly you'll get wiped off of the map.
4. Don't ever go to War. Whilst other Civilisations are off fighting Wars, your country can focus on it's economy and prosper.
5. Build only defensive units. Your only military asset should be units which gain defensive bonuses. Make sure that all of your border towns all well protected, along with your capital. Use the Monarchy way of governing to gain a happiness bonus as well.
6. Fortify your perimeter. Along your borders, try and construct as many forts as possible. When your borders expand, start building a new ring. That way the further inside your empire you go, the better protected it'll be.
7. Build plenty of port towns. Ports can offer a great advantage. You will be able to build military ships and exploration ships, helping you to meet new friends. You will also be able to help prevent invasion from the sea.
As I progress through the game and learn new things, I will add to this list. Anyone else who has ideas, just post away!!!
