Southampton

I know a bunch of you live in or near Southampton, or have done in the recent past. I'm looking to move to that area before the end of the year 'cause all my work is now in the south (Andover, Bristol, Bath, central London, Basingstoke, etc).

Any suggestions on good places to look at for houses? Decent letting agencies? Anywhere to avoid (both places and agencies)?

Also, any heads-up on what rent is like down there for a decent semi?

Cryers have never done us too much damage.
Our rent being very studenty is £270 a month. There's a lot of places around so find somewhere shouldn't be too hard. If you don't want to be stuck near a lot of students I'd look towards Chandlers Ford and Eastleigh, more expensive but less students and swarms of Polish people.
Not sure on Semi's to be honest but my mates 2 bedroom flat is pretty nice and I think that is about £310 a month. Not that huge though.
If you are in need of a place to stay while looking just shout and I'm sure we can find a bed for you.

OMGOMGOMG

Ronin + Southampton = An excuse for a beer with a fellow THNer! :D:D

But yea what bob said - there are TWO Universities in Southampton, so if you want to stay away from smelly students then do not go west of the River Itchen and perhaps look for a place in the Bitterne area, though I think somewhere in Eastleigh (just north of Soton) would be your best bet as its much closer to the motorway (M27 J5 i think) and still maintains very good public transport links. (Most trains that head north out of Southampton will stop at Eastleigh train station)

Having just moved into a semi with 5 others, Marques estate agency haven't been too bad, though keep an eye out for Mandair as a landlord - we've had problems with him, as well as some other former flatmates.
Other than that, I'm sure you enjoy it in the (relatively) sunny Southampton :D

seriously

keep the fuck away from them, unless you want them to twat everything up.

right, now thats sorted: Endsleigh have been good (who I bought my flat through). Generally all the estate agents are stuck on London Road in southampton, so it's easy to go between them in a fun day. And of course, the usual "look on rightmove.co.uk". Never done any harm, as that's originally where I found the listing for my flat anyway.

And no, no its not sunny. Its raining at the moment :-(

If you don't *need* to be in Southampton, then theres no point being in the middle of soton when youre just going to travel out of it every day. Shopping can easily be done at big asdas (mmm pizza), and its not that hard to actually get to the center from the motorway anyway. Just follow the road straight down and it dumps you pretty much in the center!

And I dont think *any* train I've been on out of southampton has stopped at Eastleigh!

I don't know much about Southampton but if you're willing to be a bit further afield I can give you a fair bit of information about Northern Hampshire and Western Surrey (around the Guildford/Winchester/Basingstoke areas).

While I know you were talking about Soton and the only reason I mention it is you said some of your work is in Basingstoke. Most places around can be a bit cheaper to live and with the transport links you can easily get where you're going. To give you one example, Aldershot (where I live) has direct train routes to London, Guildford etc and easy road routes to Basingstoke, Winchester, Southampton (all on the M3 which is ~5 mins drive from Aldershot) to name just a few places.

Let me know if you want any more info.

personally i like the outskirts and have stayed in Marchwood, Hythe, Calmore, Woolston and Netly, however i have only lived in Marchwood for any length of time that i was old enough to remember ( and even then only for about 3 months) from what i've found public transport is prretty good, and even when i biked over to see my grandparents in Woolston and it took less than an hour with most of that being lazy and waiting for the ferry from Hythe :p

Thanks Wraith and everyone else. If you've got more thoughts/comments then keep 'em coming as I'm just collecting up as much information as possible.

Rojaws did mention that Winchester might be a good option so I might give you a shout a bit later, Wraith.

I assume you're after transport links Ronin, as you don't have a car. :)

If not then peoples suggestions could be a little broader perhaps...?

I'm no help here as I live in Central Kent ;)

If you are going to be going "all over the place" across the south, then perhaps as you said someone suggested Winchester might be better. Slap Bang in the middle of Hampshire and its got trains that will go pretty much everywhere.

Or maybe Reading would be good. But Reading is expensive :)
