[mod]Moved to the Chat Box from the Soap Box. Added [Tech] prefix. Most computer build threads seem to end up in the Chat Box so figured it'd be best to keep 'em together. Strength in numbers or something like that.[/mod]

I decided against the i7 when I rebuilt my machine earlier this year on reasons of price. Instead I went for the 4 core i5 (Intel Core i5 750) that I'm finding to be excellent and probably more than I need. Laughs off everything I throw at it.

Also, I understand that many here like ATI cards but personally I won't buy another. nVidia all the way. Currently very happy with an XFX 260 GTX but we're a way past that now, I believe. Still, does a good job on everything I've thrown at it recently, though I admit that few are particularly intensive.

I'd say that 4GB of RAM and a 64bit operating system were pretty much a requirement (the latter to use all the former) and probably a SATA3 hard drive at that sort of budget.

Have a look at my profile. I had the case, PSU and heatsink before my rebuild but that's my system fairly up to date as of February this year, IIRC.

I will second the love for nVidia, they have infinitely better driver support and third party programmes that plug in and directly tweak stuff.

Having just done some modifications to my (rather old) Asus M2n32-SLi Deluxe / Wifi Edition (the other versions of this would have been far less successful), flashed the bios with Asus' beta drivers I have been able to upgrade from a AMD2 Athlon 64 X2 5000+ (OC'd at i40 to 3.01GHz) to an AM3 Athlon II X4 640 (clocked in at 3.51GHz with Spicy's help again) tied into the nVidia Geforce GTX 260 I've had for the last year I can now run any game I throw at it.

I upgraded due to being unable to run CoD: Black Ops at even 800x600 on the lowest possible settings, and am rather happy with this choice as I am now able to run it at 1920 x 1080 with AA X16 and full graphical settings.

So, Solemn, what are your brothers current specifications? Because he might just not need to spend so much money depending on existing hardware :) Obviously that doesn't mean that he shouldn't just build a new system :)
