Spore Creature Creator

For those who aren't too fed up with EA for their announced copy protection routines for Spore, you might be interested to know that they're releasing the creature creator for the game ahead of time.

Available from 17th June, I believe you may be able to download it from here. This seems to require an account with EA.

Eurogamer have a hands on for the Creature Creator.

Eurogamer said:
In our preview session with Spore's forthcoming Creature Creator, two hours was ample time to build and discard entire ecologies, bringing ranks of species to life before mercilessly extinguishing them with a single click of the mouse. Most of these animals were quite horrible, some of them were frankly embarrassing, but all of them had one thing in common: each was entirely different.

Shouldn't that be they had nothing in common?

I wonder will Spore live up to the hype.

I wonder will Spore live up to the hype.

I haven't really come across any big hype except in community sites. Eurogamer remain enthusiastically sceptical, I notice (or is that "cautiously enthusiastic"?) and still point out technical issues where they spot them and are careful to describe the game as "Evolution Lite" so I think the hype may really be in our own minds.

Me? I'm keen to see what sort of new toy Maxis have dreamed up. I've always enjoyed their toys in the past and so I figure they've a good shot at producing something new that'll interest me, whatever it may be. :)

I already got this before they pulled it before, and have made a few creatures. Very good indeed, and fun to watch them running around!

Ronin, did you try Creatures? and if so, when you've had a play, do you not think the idea's are similar or was my thoughts wrong entirely.

It's quite nifty. I had one ugly looking creature made, but now it crashed on me and won't start up anymore :/

Apparently, there's been a quarter of a million creatures created and shared so far. (source: Eurogamer). Unfortunately, a bunch of those were basically walking willies; I blame Nanor!

Eurogamer said:
Those making walking willies or booby beasts have reported emails from EA warning that accounts are being flagged and may be axed if it continues, according to GamesRadar.

Featuring the Freudian nightmare. A phallus that sprays liquid from it's long tale. Yummy!

Honestly now, did EA really think that wouldn't happen? Seriously? If so, oh my god...

Right, if anyone else is having an issue with the thing crashing to desktop 95% of the time you start it up, this worked for me. Essentially, delete DMCmdPortalClient.dll from your sporebin directory.

Seems to run fine now... :/

I'm having no issues creating creatures... but everytime I try to register, after completing all the fields and clicking submit I get "an unknown error has occured, please try again later". Been happening two days!

So I can't share any of them :(

I'm having a similar issue, where it just seems to be ignoring the fact that I have an internet connection... Can't register, log in, or anything. Shame, too, cause I was gonna drop the $10 for it, but damned if I'm going to pay for something that doesn't even work.
