Steam Christmas Sale

Just a heads up that the Steam holiday sale has started. I'm holding out for Xcom at 50% off. Nothing much else is on my radar at the moment though (mainly due to a busy RL).

Some of the bundles really are incredibly good value though...

I was waiting for Xcom, but the price was still too high at over 20 quid.

I picked up the highly rated Crusader Kings 2 for a tenner, but don't really know how to play it.

Given the history of steam sales, if its not in a Flash Sale, Daily Deal, or Community Voted Deal. Dont buy it.... - until the last, or 2nd to last (to be safe you dont miss it somehow,) day of the sale.

I've been burned too many times by 25% off sale price and 50-75% off a day later in a daily deal pretty much ANY item with a price reduction lower than 75% can go on a 75% deal, plenty of 66% off items also go to 75% on daily.

One kind thing is steam have a trend of repeating the "best" deals at the end of the sale.

Also, people should probably have a look at the Amazon.com digital sales, I got Bioshocks 1 and 2 and Spec Ops the Line for $9.99. . . .

You just need to have a valid US address, not necessarily your own. . . .

Space Marine collection is 75% off. Anybody know if this game is worth it (currently $7.50 including add-ons).

Xcom is again discounted at 33%. Maybe they just cycle through the same games/discounts every few days or so?

Space Marine is a good game for a 3rd person action game....Just if you're a fan of the 40k universe, don't think of it as a 40k game. The Lascannon (Anti-Tank) Is used as an Anti-Infantry sniper role. Plasma Gun (Anti-Everything) Shoots like a Machine Gun and does no damage.

Yeah its an alright gears of war style action game, and the multi player has some charm to its unlock system and customization, but its not really a 40k game.

At $7.50 for the full pack i took the plunge and bought it. I was a big fan of 40k back in the day, but haven't so much as looked at it in the past 15 years (yes, im very old), so am not too fussed if the weapons dont work as i remembered. I just wish you could play as Orcs, as i used to field a 40k Orc army. I suppose i will just have to contend myself with disembowling them instead... :)

Would of liked that myself. But then, there's only one game where you couldn't play as a Spesh mareen, and that was Fire Warrior (Multiplayer not included.)

Wow, that's super cheap. But is it legit?

I'm also really tempted by Civ 5 at 75% off. But then i know what a time-hole civ games can be and i basically have very limited time available...

Yes it's legit. I regularly talk (on IRC) with one of the founders of Green Man Gaming. They are pretty good!

I got the Borderlands 2 season pass for £7.00 instead of its usual £19.99 a couple of days ago from there :) Code came through instantly and worked instantly... the main problem was having to wait for steam to download the new stuff :D

Regarding Civ V - yes it can be a time-hole, however it's turn based so it is something you can very easily pick up and put down whenever you like, assuming you can resist the "just one more turn..." effect, that is :)

I ended up buying 2 games so far on the steam sale - Space Marine and Civ V. I'm enjoying both, although Space Marine's storyline is totally transparent, especially if you ever played Dawn of War, from which they basically copied the entire plot. Still a fun game though. Just wondering if there is some way i can listen to all the servo skulls without actually having to explore every nook and cranny to find them? For example on youtube or something? They are mostly interesting stories, but i just cant be stuffed searching for them. Also i have to say i love the Jump-pack. Its great fun, even though you dont get to use it much.

SOS - I need some help with Civ V. I'm the kind of player that likes to expand and build new cities early on. I used to play Civ III and it encouraged you to do that. But Civ V seems to punish you for expanding as your citizens become unhappy. So my question is, is there a way to expand in the early game without your citizens becoming unhappy and screwing your population growth/production? What tech's and social policies should i research to help with this?

I'm also struggling a bit in the mid to late game. Very early is kind of boring as you dont do much and basically just explore the map and research a heap of tech. Mid game is interesting as you fight various people and form alliances, etc. But late game it kind of just grinds along with you researching techs and building a heap of buildings in each city and not doing much else - sort of a scaled down Sim City. And i kind of lose my way on what i should be doing. Any tips?

With Civ V you generally need to play with a particular victory condition in mind from the start - though whatever way i try to play, generally I end up killing everyone because they all get jealous ;)
If you like building lots of cities then starting off with the Liberty social policies tree is probably a good start - it's designed to let you expand faster, earlier. After that, Tradition is probably a good one, as that helps with turning your capital into a massive powerhouse.

From there I pick my policies based on how it looks like the game is panning out - if there are a lot of wars going on I'll probably end up selecting Honor - if not then usually into Commerce, which allows you to have a better infrastructure.

Are you also playing with the Gods and Kings expansion?

To add onto what thatbloke said, temples and religion are a great way to keep people happy :) plus think it helps your expansions (or is that Civ IV?) man been too long since I played Civ V........
