[Tech] Stopping Torrents at Certain Times

Word home dawgs,

Living with a few techy guys this year and we all like to be assholes and leave our torrents on when we go to class. Using the admin control panel for Virgin interwebs (which I have sole access to) can I stop torrents from running from say 11am - 12am?

Cheers babes!

Only way to actually stop torrenting is to block everthing and then selectively allow a few things. Torrents are designed to be hard to stop so you need a pretty draconian approach to stopping them. There are some layer 7 filters out there that will catch some (but not all) traffic but your router is not going to support those so its draconian or bust ...

If you really want to have a play with traffic management then put a linux router between your existing cable modem/router and have some fun (not a small project).

If you're willing to wait a couple of months for production to catch up, the Raspberry Pi would be an ideal solution here... :)

Alas, only one network port, not impossible, but more tricksy
Good point - I'd somehow completely forgotten there was only a single ethernet socket. Could probably get a USB -> ethernet adapter, but that does push up the cost a bit.

It's too bad that Virgin have moved away from discrete modems like they used to supply in the past, as they gave a bit more flexibility in allowing more advanced networking setups. Unfortunately it's just a hub / superhub you get these days.

Could you not just use QoS or some such to limit their bandwidth a lot?

or you know, you could just.... ask them?

I hope they say the same about you and want to cut *your* internet off.

you could all stop being douches to each other and some to some sort of agreement.

Hell you could probably pool your torrents together.

I mean i'm sure that they don't need 4 people all downloading the latest episode of Glee at the same time.

Since when did we start advocating reasonable-ness over retribution?

Sheesh :P

Perhaps put a voluntary cap on porn downloads? Maybe share it? You guys probably have a formidable library between you. Do you also find people are stealing your tissues too frequently?

RPi actually would be the solution.
>RPi seedbox + external usb drive
>QoS based on port, set it to lowest priority and get everyone to download torrents via the communal seeding box.

Everyone wins.

Doesn't have to be an RPi for that, obviously. An old laptop running Linux would work too. Especially if you want it in the next 6 months and don't want to worry about dicking around with new tech. There's loads of tutorials on how to set utorrent with a web interface. RPi would be cool, but not necessary.

Oooh, can I limit their bandwidth? Sounds delightfully fun. They could pay me per kb/s they want.
