Just curious as to how many people here have and play (or are willing to play) System Shock 2? I have it (by far one of the best games ever), and have been playing with the multiplayer side of it for quite a while. I'm thinking of organising some sessions of coop goodness on this amazing game.
Multiplayer was released for the game, free of charge, as a final patch. You can download the patch here as long as you have the full retail version of the game. You might also want to think about the Rebirth mod for the game, which gives the models nice hi-res textures. It's currently in Beta 1, and has been since 2003, but its still great
Now, for those who haven't played System Shock 2, you (in SP) can play as 1 of 3 factions - a psychic guy with mind bullets, a heavy weapons guy, or a hacker/engineer. Really, these are just baseline player concepts, as each player can train in any skill, but you only have a limited number of "points" with which to train your skills. These give you different methods to complete the game's puzzels - kill everything, then go around doing the puzzels; hack some computers, avoiding security systems and enemies; or use your psychic powers to kill a few things and open the doors.
Now, the thing I found annoying about the game is that you can't really play across skill sets. Therefore, if you are a heavy weapons guy, you will need maintance in order to repair your degrading weapons. If you are a hacker, you won't be able to use the big guns. However, sometimes these skills complement each other - a hacker can open a door with a big gun behind it, which a hacker will rarely use.
Now, in coop, each player trains themselves as they want. Items within the game exist the same as in single player, meaning that if there is an item you don't want, you can still pick it up and give it to your friend, yet the "points" you use to train yourself are given to all players - if your friend finds some on the ground, you can still use them. With this in mind, you can have (for example) 2 heavy weapons guys who train themselves to hold the big guns, a hacker/engineer to repair guns and research items, and a psychic dude to do helpful things like pull some ammo from a room full of bad guys and not much else. Coop gives a lot of new dimensions to the game, and it's great.
So, who has SS2, or wants it, and is willing to give it a try? SS2 is not free, but you can buy it from the usual places for old games (the best of which seems to be GamesWarehouse which is around £7 for the game and shipping to the UK from Aus). Anyone who is interested, please post.
Also, the ultimate guide and resource for System Shock 1 (which you CAN download) and 2 is very helpful.
Finally, mods, if you want to move this thread, feel free.
Cheers for reading all.
