TeamSpeak ... the re-awaking

[mod]Gotta love the smell of failure in the morning, Prom's having issues today so I've brought the db changes up on Nostromo for you all to have a look. I'll backport any changes to Prom from Nostromo once its fixed[/mod]

We have a new teamspeak server build ready to go live on Wednesday morning first thing. Luc and thatbloke have both put in a lot of time and re-created a permissions system that does not suck nearly as badly as the broken one we have currently.

If you want an early look around you can login using nostromo.thehavennet.org.uk as the server name (usual password).

Initially we'll be hosting teamspeak somewhere stable ... this was going to be Prom but its having issues today so we'll see - possibly destiny again for the time being.

Bear in mind we'll still need to work out promotions for various folks which we can only do once you've logged in at least once. We'll be making a few folks Channel Admins to allow sub-channel creation in community group channels. This should allow you to sort your own sub-channel structure the way you want it keeping the top level nice and clean. Initially it may look a bit barren - don't fret as thats by design to keep the top level structure locked down.

Regards

Haven

TL;DR is:

There are no channels for games by default.

If you're playing a game, you make a channel for it

Once youre done and you all leave, it'll disappear :)

So for tf2 weds, the first person in TS will make a channel for it, and then when the last person leaves, it'll disappear. IT'll mean that you only have to search through the list of channels which are currently in use, and not through the list of channels for every game that ever has existed which is becoming increasingly tricky with the current setup!

In the current setup I do occasionally delete channels that haven't seen much activity, but that can be tricky if you remove one and then someone else says BUT WE USED THAT CHANNEL ONCE A MONTH or something like that

Apparently my TL;DR was also too long.

New version:

Suck it.

In a way, this just completely avoids that problem.

In practise, people seem to sign in, gather up a few friends, then play whatever comes to mind. Accordingly, those sat in, say, the Company of Heroes channel could actually be playing Payday, or Starcraft, or anything in fact. This just leaves a whole load of empty channels for no good purpose and also makes it more tricky to find people as a result (yeah, a few seconds, but y'know the deal).

Then the permanent channels are left for people who actually use/need some structure, such as guilds or clans with multiple sub-forums.

If people actually do need some sort of structure for an ongoing endeavour, we can provide that easily. But if it's just a matter of getting a "room" together to do some gaming, just make one up on the day.

For more information on the Teamspeak design, please check out the wiki.

A further note on this - it's not totally gospel and "definitely" what will happen. We think this is a good balance between having the channels that people will use often, and reducing the amount of clutter that is currently present on the server.

If people don't believe that this will work, or, if after some time, we feel that it's not working out or we should change things, then let us know why and we will look into doing so.

One of the main problems with the current setup is that a number of channels are not necessarily used for their intended purpose, add to that the problems with permissions (particularly with subscribing to channels), and you get people always using the same channel over and over, regardless of what they are doing. While we're not trying to be draconian about it, if I want to play, for instance, some BF3, and join a channel called "Battlefield 3" - I'd sort of expect anyone else already in there to be playing/talking about Battlefield 3.

Teamspeak is for talking to people, hopefully more talking can happen/be encouraged with this. :)

Can I vote for a single channel called "Haven's house of spandex monkey love" and have everyone in there all the time ?

*thinks this will solve all the issues*

There's a new teamspeak server live now on destiny. The usual details for logging in should work fine.

Few questions.

Are we going to keep it "clean" and have few rooms as possible or are we going to make more rooms i.e so that ppl can talk with few selected players and not all that once.
Not trying to be a a-hole here. Just wondering :p

Goto gaming -> right click -> create sub channel

BOOM. a room so that people can talk with a few selected players :)

After reading the wiki page on TS I started thinking if it is possible to get a permanent Starcraft 2 channel under groups.

"There is a significant amount of regular activity."
- Well if you think 4 people is then sure ;)
"There is a member willing to be a group leader for the group, in order to facilitate the groups administration needs."
- Well I can do that. :)

Is there anything wrong with just creating a sub channel when you need it? Only takes a few seconds to make.

Good work on the channel naming so far guys. "Bla" and "WTF" are top quality gaming related channel titles :p.... I hope thats only temporary ....

Did you seriously not expect that to happen?
If so, your faith in this community acting responsibly is very commendable whilst being, obviously, completely wrong ;)
