Teamspeak Trouble

Tonight on teamspeak T-Bone and I noticed some channels appearing all over the place with no specific purpose and with stupid names (mofo, more mofo, etc). One registered user name PieFace, and an unregistered user called TIkA-A were in the guild wars channel at the time me and T-Bone were discussing the random channels that were appearing.

Just as we were talking, a channel with an offence name directed at T-Bone was created. We took action by banning both players and investigating the problem. We found out that unregistered users can create temporary channels, and registered users can create permanent channels, but not delete them. To add to this, unregistered users can register themselves with our teamspeak server with ease.
In response to this, I am taking the liberty of logging onto our teamspeak server and altering the permissions so this cannot happen. Of course, we can discuss alternate settings and change them accordingly if not everyone agrees with what I am changing.

I will be changing the settings so that:

Only admins can grant unregistered players to register.
Unregistered users can do nothing but talk.
Registered users can create temporary channels.

This thread is open for discussion on the matter.

I agree here, causing users to register will also increase security.

However, whilst there are a lot of unneeded channels on teamspeak, I don't see why the changes should affect the people we all ready know and love on teamspeak (i.e registered users)

Secondly, I'm sure I've seen TikA-A before on the server, he may have something to do with the Unreal community, perhaps Pestcontrol knows otherwise.

Does this mean they can't switch to another channel? If so, that's no good, especially if you need an admin to give the register rights...

No they can switch to any channel that is not passworded. Unregistered users will have the right to switch to registered channels by default.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean here, but the changes are to prevent inconsiderate people spamming channels in our TS server. They cause mess and it means that someone has to clean up afterwards.
As for the unneeded channels, Pestcontrol is in the process of removing unused channels and he will post up at some point which ones he has removed.

Pestcontrol is yet to read this post, when he does he can let us know if he knows this person...

Another thing that's been bothering me is the plethora of channels anyone can create and never get deleted. I have to scroll down to UT2004 all the time.

Users can now create non-registered channels, this is fine for games you incidentally play. If it becomes a game commonly played within the THN community, you can ask an admin to create a registered channel for it.

As such, i've deleted the following channels:
  • Abuse Room!!!
  • Away
  • Battlefield Vietnam
  • Battlefield 2: Special Forces (can be recreated as subchannel of Battlefield 2)
  • Civilization IV
  • COD: United Offensive
  • Command & Conquer [FD]
  • Day of Defeat
  • Eve
  • F.E.A.R.
  • Medieval: Total War
  • MoH: Pacific Assault
  • Quake II
  • Red Orchestra - Ostfront
  • Red Orchestra (can be subchannel of UT2004)
  • Rome:Total War
  • Settlers
  • Starcraft
  • System Shock 2
  • Tiberian Sun
Fishy: He's not anyone i know, but i'm checking his IP against the server logs i have now.

EDIT: pieface resolves to 84-43-3-80.ppp.onetel.net.uk and pings 45 to me, so he's a broadband user from britain, probably with a dynamic ip.
TikA-A resolves to 5353C696.cable.casema.nl, which happens to be my isp. That means he's someone from my area, the only friend i have who uses casema and knows about THN is ARJ (that fucked up commander from Natural Selection, remember.. :)), but he's not the one to do this, at all. Casema uses only static IP addresses for their cable service.

I've checked ALL UT2004/AlienSwarm logs, stretching almost a year, for both addresses. No matches. TikA-A is definitely not an unrealer, pieface might be as he could have a dynamic ip, but it seems unlikely.

EDIT2: I've gone through the teamspeak rights with KillCrazy and made the following changes: Channel Admins can no longer give other people CA, rather a server admin has to appoint it. Server Admins can still apoint and remove SA status to other people, as there doesnt seem to be an easy uber admin thing to use to store this privilege in. Please be careful with it.
Operators can create sub channels, moderate channels and set passwords, but no longer edit the codec. It's much like IRC now.

I'm also deleting the users that have never logged in and aren't active on our forums.

EDIT3: I'm just deleting everyone who's never logged in. You can always ask an admin to allow you to reregister.

All this seems fair enough except that I suspect the Civ players will want the Civ4 channel back.

Thanks for the work on this guys!

I made an interesting error last night.

T-bone came into our channel to ask us who had allowed PieFace to register, I replied that unregistered users can do it themselves, and I decided I'd show him. Test complete I disconected.

Unfortunetly, I then forgot my login details so had to create a new account, which means there are two SA accounts with the nickname of Fi$hy, I can tell you my current details via PM (if anyone's interested) so the old account can be deleted..

But yes, bit of a noob-ish error proving a security hole :p

Marcian - 84.130.**.*****

and

Zaglak - 84.130.120.******

A little bit of monitoring never hurts. :) I've setup a script hooking in to a flexible new mutator that gives me a yell every time you play with an alias. :D

Because it's not that big a problem, we only get kickable/bannable offences periodically. When was the last time there wasn't at least one SA on t.s anyway :p

That's exactly what we do. :) We don't hand rights out to everyone in THN, though, because it can quickly become a case of "too many cooks" and everything gets to be a mess. Instead, we get a pretty decent coverage off those who have the required privs and if issues come up it's a good bet to:

  • Log names, times, things said, etc
  • Post / shout / whisper for admin help

Then we can help best.
