[Tech] Headset suggestions

Hey,

Wasn't sure whether to bump or start afresh, so apologies if my 50-50 choice went the wrong way!

My current Creative Alpha headset is pretty much buggered - one of the cups is dangling by a thread half the time and the other one doesn't work at all. Can't be bothered going through their support as I don't have the receipt and they'll probably say I did it, and the headset isn't great anyway. So I'm looking for a new one. Preferably sub-£100 if possible (saving up for a new Macbook Pro too) but can stretch a little over once joyous payday comes. Not too fussed about USB as I've got a Creative Fata1ity soundcard but if a headset can actually make 5.1/7.1 sound like it should with USB then that's great; the Creative one was USB but surround doesn't really do anything on it. I saw Sennheiser, SteelSeries and others bouncing around on the forums - the Logitech G35s also seem worth a look I think, or am I being a bit silly? And where's a good place to buy?

Cheers guys :)

130 quid to look likea robot version of you and vibs? no thanks :p

I have some cheap £25 creative fata1ity headset thing and after mangling the cable around for a year or so, one of the connections is a bit off. I also have a pair of HD202 senn cans for music, and can just use those with my external mic. I've stopped using the inbuilt mic on my headset now :S

As for places to buy: amazon, scan, oc, etc.

Theres a fair range at: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=702&catid=1058&sortby=priceAsc&rows=0

The other thing is whether you find them comfortable or not and how they feel on your head. If you have someone with ones you can try thats usually a good idea first before buying if youre going to be spending stupid amounts of money on a headset. But I guess if youre buying macs then you're used to that ;-)

I like my SteelSeries Siberia V2 but not without mitigation.

They're a little too tight when wearing glasses. That improves with time as the pads and overhead arch soften slightly but it's still a noticeable pressure at times.

However, that same feature means that they also dull sounds outside the headphones, which is an aspect I really appreciate. I can find myself wearing them with no sound playing just for the quiet that creates. It's not as perfect as, say, the Sennheiser noise cancelling feature, but then they're a third of the price so...

I was worried about the pull-out microphone but actually that's turned out to be an excellent feature and not at all fragile as I feared.

I have, however, had to move to a second pair as my first have a damaged driver somewhere in the left ear, probably from one of the three house moves I've made in the past two years. I'm treating the second pair more carefully and keeping the first pair for knock-about travelling.

Sound quality is good, clear, running through my Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer card.

I had a pair of Zalman surround sound headphones a few years back and honestly I don't think the surround part of it is noticeable or worth the effort. High quality stereo does the job beautifully (even for audio-location in games).

On the comfort: I've never found a pair of headphones that I've found perfectly comfortable while wearing glasses so I just live with the slight pressure and wear-in required. If that's not a factor, then I think the SteelSeries Siberia V2's are excellent.

I'll go with everything Wol said - the creative fatilities are very good for the price, and I've actually found them to be pretty sturdy overall, mic included. Anything sennheiser is likely to be decent quality - their range goes from ridiculously cheap to ridiculously expensive - I've got both a pair of HD202s and HD212s, both of which are decent quality and each part is replaceable if it breaks (my cable has got caught up in chair wheel too many times :P)

Definitely go for the try before you buy option though - there's a number of headphones I'd never buy ever from a quick listen!

:D

Cheers guys. I've still got a Fata1ity headset back in Croydon from when I bought my soundcard - silly lady only scanned the headset in the double pack so I paid £25 for both - so will see if that's any use and then look something else if needed. Keep the suggestions coming :)

I agree with Ronin, the v2 are great :) Also, I have no problems with my glasses under them.
